Ok, so I just built my new machine today (Athlon 64 4800 X2, BFG GeForce 7900 GTX, 2GB RAM, 2x SATA drives etc)

I decided to keep my old hard drives connected so I could transfer files etc over easilly to my planned new install of windows on the new sata raid.

Whilst setting it up (bios) I accidently booted into windows on my old installation, unexpectedly it booted up fine. So I just uninstalled all the old drivers and installed the drivers for the new hardware and all seems to be working.

Now, this is obviously slower on my old ATA133 rather than a RAID0 of two SATA 2 drives. But I was thinking perhaps this is better. I'm currently thinking of now installing XP Pro x64 on the sata raid. (hopefully there are drivers for the raid hardware for XP x64)

Anyone out there who has an Athlon 64 and XP x64? What are your opinions of it?  Are the drivers mature enough?

There's no real benefit yet to x64. See my sig for the rig I've got. That said, it's been 100% stable, quick and I've not had any issues with it which would make me not recommend it.

I dunno about buying it though. Mine's a dodgy copy.

Do you have a dual boot setup? (one with 32bit and 64bit versions of XP Pro?)

That's what i'm thinking of doing with mine, having a dualboot setup of 32bit and 64bit versions of XP Pro.

XP Pro 64 has occasional issues where its emulator will not run old software (classic Doom being among the ranks). I would suggest that you go with XP Pro first and foremost, but if you do things like image/video editing, then keep XP Pro 64 as another OS option. I advise putting them on seperate hard drives.

But if you're just word processing, surfing the net and playing games, there's no real reason to spend the money on XP Pro 64. Just save your cash for Vista.

it is definitely not worth it.  it has a lot of driver problems and no real performance benefits.

Okey dokey, i'll install normal XP on my sata raid setup.

I'll wait and see if Vista is anygood for x64.

I only have x64 installed. Works fine.

And to Janus67, I've not had any driver issues whatsoever. If you're running relatively new hardware, then the manufacturers are getting pretty good at releasing 64-bit drivers. That said all my kit is quite new and from large brand names (ASUS, Creative, etc).
