I hate to say there is an element of this game, where I suck hands down (other than flying, I pwn nubs at sucking at flying), but, I can't command for shit, I never manage to get 3rd 2nd or 1st, even on winning team.

I play engie so I can repair assets and still be able to drop crates for squads.
I scan as often as I can. (90% of the time as soon as it is ready)
I intereact with squadleaders for both orders and spotting of enemy troop movement.
I react to requests for arty/UAV/supplies/orders.
I would HOPE that I empower my team, and help them win, even by not running around much.

So the question is, wtf am I doing wrong?

Example: When I play normally, my commander sometimes pushes me into second place even when I have a (by my standards) good score of 150-200.

But as a commander, I can never get good score.

This is not just a score whine btw, if there are better commanders getting higher score, I'm letting my team down if I don't try to emulate the better commanders.

I've also read the Commander thread on Featured Posts, and don't feel I'm doing anything out of the ordinary.

I almost never get requests for anything when commanding because I already put what they are asking for in the place they probably wanted it. The exception would be the guy blowing up enemy assets or the sniper on the edge of the map who is out of ammo. Alot of spots need to happed as well, preferably enemies that someone on your team is near. Zoom in on the map and spot when someone is capping a flag and you have already used the uav somewhere else.

It's your team that gets you the points. You gain a fraction of their points everytime someone in your team gains points. It is NOT the average of your team's score (you cannot lose points as commander).
As long as you are commander from the beginning and your team is gaining reasonable points, you'll get a good score. Just don't do anything to take points from your team members (excessive arty kills, if your team don't get the points for the kill, you won't either). And leave capping of the flags to your team as well.

I won't cap a flag unless I am the only person within reasonable distance of it.
And that happens very very rarely.

I'm beginning to think it's the caliber of teams that I end up commanding for, and just bad luck for me.

i dont like being comander that much but i do like finding the opostions comander n then stabin him to death whilste he looks at 70 degrea angle into space.

TIP: if you are a comander the best place to hide is in the water! swim far out to sea and pray you dont get a mutiny vote, although im not sure if this works cos i aint tryed it for a few patches

Hi, I´m Eckzack and I love commanding. Most time of comanding I´m idling in some ground defense trinking a good cup of coffee and watch TV while my team works hard for my gold-medal. When I´m not idling while commanding I use supply-drops and UAV only to support my tank-whoring to gain another gold-medal... cheers

As commander u should try to find some cover, nothing is more fun than dropping a crapload of arty at the oposing commander  :-)

To the issue, sounds like u do the right things, for the uav who is your most important tool - use it at the most crowded enemy spaces where your troops are attacking.

And not all maps yield u gold as commander, easiest commander map would be warlord, almost certain gold or silver if your team wins and the uav can easy cover two flags.

Be mindful where u drop your supplycrates, dont drop just to drop.

Squads cant type to eachother !

Press J and type a message that everybody can see onscreen.
Press K and type a message that your teammembers can see onscreen.
Press L and type a message that only your squad can see onscreen.

Commander can of course only see J and K messages.

Doesn't matter what you do as a commander. Your total score is the average of your teams. So basically you could just go do something else, while being an idle commander, come back, and get a gold medal for just being the commander. Course you need a good team to win for you.

Thats what I'm beginning to think, I work hard as a foot soldier.
And get good score from that.
Relying on other people for my score...sucks.

Using the Voip helps alot.Every squad leader as well as anyone in a squad can hear you.So you can better explain your orders or situation without wasting time typing.Sometimes you have to know what your troops need without them asking.
Commanding requires alot of multitasking. If you want higher command scores play on servers with like 16-20 players with large maps. This way you have to fight and can't just sit idle and rely on everyone else.

Maybe so, but as a footsoldier dont u quite often use info supplied by the commander ?

It goes both ways, the footies need a good commander and the commander cant do jack shit without dedicated footies like u !!

Varegg, A good commander helps. Although sometimes I rely on visual information from the commander only with my squads, he pops a UAV, we kill stuff, he calls a sniper or such, we hunt and kill.

But, I've been on teams that gelled so well, we didn't have a commander and STILL won against the team with A commander, UAV, Scans Supplies and Arty.

Swings and roundabouts in the end, a good commander can swing the balance if the teams are evenly matched, but if not, it's not gonna happen.

Maybe thats the situation I have, I'm not a great commander, and I keep commanding teams that don't match the opposition evenly, so none of us get all that many points?

Yeah Yeah, I know, it sucks that I still can't command for shit after nearly 500 hours, but, I can't fly either, so I'll cope with this embarressment. =P

That's just BEGGING for an artillery strike. Just... well, to make you swim out there again, mostly. >.>

Winning lotsa points as Commander requires that you have a good team. With a good team, you get lots of points. With a bad team, you don't. Simple as.

Obviously, you have to do the spotting/UAV/scan thing, but in the end it boils down to how good the players on the other team are as compared to those on yours. If they're much, much better, then you're probably screwed without some kind of herculean effort.

Try shouting 'Go, Go, Go!' every two minutes or so. It seems to do -something- to the teams I command. >.>

I'm sorry but thats the way it is. You don't have to be a good commander to get medals. You just have to be the commander on the winning team. And if you can idle while being on the winning team, you will get medals.

Dont know about u but i have no problem getting more points than an idle commander, a commander that does nothing lets his men fight blindfolded witch is not good.

An idle commander makes it easier for the other team to win - alas an idle commander stinks !

Must use voip. Im no. 1907 in global commanding.
Spotting enemies for your team is vital

I agree with the VOIP posts; remember the squads can't see your commander screen so they don't know where the enemy is on the way to unless you tell them. You can spot and UAV all you like, but nothing beats getting on the comms and saying "their heading to this flag, set up an ambush". If you just say "defend here", most squads will go and it'll be a straight fight. If your squads better, great; if its not, then you've lost a flag. If you say "Defend here, their heading in from the south in a Hummer up the road. Theres also a sniper to the west overlooking the flag" and then spot the sniper, your squad doesn't need to search the cap point, they can concerntrate on a few areas and kick the living hell out of anything that moves.

VOIP can get your intention to your squad leaders. Give an order, then get on the comms and explain what you want to achieve, what the enemy is doing that stops you achieving it and then trust your squads to be able to deliver. As the commander, your not realistically going to win the fight on your own; against decent opposition it just doesn't work. Support and coordinate your squads and you'll get your high score and you'll win the round to double it.

Theres a good string of posts about the varying importance of flags that you might want to take a look at as it should help govern where you ask your squads to attack. The number of flags you hold isn't always the deciding factor; have a read of the posts and you'll see what I mean.

Missing the Gold even if you are on the winnig team as commander depends on how even the team is. With a heli whoring crew that scores a gazilion (raping TV-station o Sharqi) and the rest of the team just normal groundpounders the gold and silver is gone. They will help you get the double points but they also get the top meddals.

Wait...whats this "commander" thing again? I was under the impression that if you were commander, it meant that you were supposed to be in a jet?

And how do you get people to follow your orderes? Nobody plays these games to use teamwork...how silly would that be? You dont get as many points that way!

...but all cynicism aside, 90% of the people that play BF2 dont follow orders, dont use teamwork, and just farm kill points like they are playing UT2k4. To be a good commander, you have to be a good commander, and hope, against hope, that you get a golden squad. These are the squads that you tell them to do something, and they do it, and they do it well. You will almost *never* have more than one golden squad in a game. If you do, you will sweep the other team.

My advice? Join a clan. Good clans use teamwork, commanding, and play to win, instead of playing to get more points.

It has been said here by a couple of people, that as a commander you need a good team to win, but you also need a good commander to help the team.

It's a delicate balance.

I've have played as commander where I haven't had to do a great deal (so I thought) as the team worked well, they push flags, contained enemy rushes etc. All I did was place UAV where I thought it was best served, and supply crates where they may have been needed.

I have also played on maps where the team just wouldn't go forward, got bogged down. And this was despite constant UAV/scanning, dropping supply crates and arty to suppress enemy respawners.

Sometimes it all comes together, sometimes it doesn't.

All I can suggest is:-
- Time your UAV and scans. There is a time when the UAV is recharging, and the scan is your friend.
- Arty Is a good way to suppress spawn points at flags. Once your team has captured a point, drop arty at the next flag that may be attacked. Helps keep the opposition under control, and gives yout team a chance to  regroup for the next flag.
- Drop drop drop supply crates.
- Practice in single player on ultra hard mode. This a good way to learn the best spots for deploying UAV.

But having said all that, you can do all the things your supposed to, but most of all it a constant learning curve.

Hope this helps, and that's my 2 cents.

-Find a good spot and stay there the whole round. It should be relatively near to mainbase, secluded, and it should have a roof or some kind of head cover so no bombs fall on said head.

-UAV the biggest clump of people important to your team. 5 stat-padders, don't UAV them. A squad of 4 moving in on a base, UAV. An armor column standing still, UAV.

-Don't artillery just whenever, wait for an opportunity. If there's a squad headed towards a flag, wait for them to move in, then artillery it.

-Stop looking at the cmdr screen for a while and poke your head out. It's good for your character's eyes and besides you might need a new spot if they're on to you.

-Use the 3x view.

-DON'T BE AN ANNOYING ASSHAT SPAMMER SAYING "ENEMY ______ SPOTTED" 50 TIMES A SECOND

-Drop supplies on friendly clumps. In other words the reverse of where to put the UAV.

-VOIP/text a LOT. Like this:

<TEAM>Commander: couple planes on enemy carrierr go steal them
<TEAM>Commander: 2 campers there watcch out
<TEAM>Commander: gj
<TEAM>Commander: squad 4 you want supplies?

etc.

-Make use of the small commands like "Move! Artillery" and "Follow Orders!"

I don't know why these help, but it seems that whenever I do this I get around 100 points, EA needs to really clarify the commander scoring...

One time as commander I had 30 points after the 2x bonus to win the gold star.  This was a 15-20 minute round on Clean Sweep.  I spent most of my time defending the MEC airbase.
