Hi, Bf2 has been the first online game that I have really been able to get into and because of this I don’t own a mic/headset. I constantly hear people saying how good it is when the whole team is coordinated using Voip/Ts so I was thinking of buying a mic.

The thing that is holding me back though is the fact that in the 200hrs that I have spent playing this game I have only twice had people speaking to me over Voip and when I join servers I never see them saying that they have a Ts server (Apart from Bf2s server).

So my question is that do u guys use ur mic a lot if you have one and if you do what servers do you play?

Thanks.

Ps. Any recommendations of what mic?

I rarely use a mic on bf2 voip. i tend to use my clans ventrilo. Basically i dont normaly use my mic unless playing with m8s, so if u play with ur m8s its good to have a mic (on any map)

I have a standalone mic thats about 10 years old, its a crappy beige one but it works a treat

Well it all depends on what servers you play on, and who you play with.

I mean, it's all right if you're just going to random servers by yourself. Maybe you'll get lucky and find one where people love VoIP, but if you are going to a server you always go to with a bunch of other people you know, a mic would help a lot. You could all go on the same teamspeak server or even use the VoIP in game.
It helps a lot for teamwork as you can communicate a LOT faster.

Seeing how mics are very cheap, I'd get one if I were you.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I’m not in a clan.

I only have a couple of mates that play and I can see it being much better and maybe funnier playing with them if I had a mic.

And I suppose that it would fix the whole pilot co-pilot situation where I as co pilot spot a helo/boat/tank but my pilot insists on going to the enemy un capable where we get shot down in less than a minute by AA. With a mic i could tell him and mabey he would pay attention.

Ok so it seems that it would be worth buying a mic.
Ive heard bad things about that logitech presicion, people saying that it fell off their head etc.
Ive been looking at the Plantronics GameCom 1:

It got some good reviews.

I have a mic that I got with a flight sim ages ago, never used it.

I have VOIP disabled in BF2, I just don't feel like using it. Plus, I feel like a right twat wearing it.

i have a head set and i love it. but i will be honest with you, i didnt use a headset untill i joined a clan where it brought a whole other level of enjoyment. using ts with your mates is so much fun, you can have such a laugh. i did occasionally use voip in game but it werent that great unless you know the people you are talking too. i dont know if that helps you at all :s

I don't use the mic often but it is handy at times when teamwork is really at play.

I always reciprocate, +1 for you too.

Whenever i've been in a game with people who use mics (before I disabled the VOIP option) what they said was hardly discernable and sounded more like they were trying to dry hump my ears.

Yup a mic is a major plus...

IMHO it's one of the major advantages, I generally try to switch around between the squads until I get some decent communication.

It's really amazing what a group of 4 people can do on mic.

Or at the begining of a round type: squad 3 for mics and teamplay

On a 32 player map you generally get 2 people to join almost right away, if you havn't already done so enable VOIP it's not great but its what most people use.

-------------------------------------

It also helps your commanding, personally I believe this is a must. I love when a commander tells people where the enemy is via voice.

While commanding, A defend here mouse click just doesn't seem to be as effective as, "Hey squad 2 someones running up on your flag from north. Can you take him out?"

or

"Hey tank dude, there is a humvee crossing the river can you take him out"

Followed by a spot and a "thanks m8" if he complies.

There is just so much you can tell people by voice faster than you can with the keys.

----------------------------------

Hope to see you all on voip

A mic is definately recommened.  I use my headset to play 95% of the time, so a not to bother the wife.  I use it to talk both on Teamspeak when playing with clan mates and also the VOIP in game.

It is really cool playing in a squad or commanding when you can communicate with voice.  If you do get a mic, stop by the BF2s Gibson server on Sat. night.  Lots of the people from the forums are there, and Chuy also runs a teamspeak server, many also use the ingame VOIP.  Makes the game that much better talking to squad members.

A mic is like $5 or $10 and WELL worth it.

A mic makes it much easier to tell someone they're a fucking idiot.

Its totally worth it, just most people use TeamSpeak or some other VIOP service.

Heres how you should do this....

Buy a mic... find a clan server with good people, make sure you like the clan... join a clan that uses ventrilo/TS....

this will make your bf2 play much more enjoyable becuase you have a group of people you like and know usually in the same squad talking and coordinating....

get a mic

No way would I play without a mic now that I've gotten use to it. Find a good squad of guys and you can get info across much easier. Make sure you bind your mic key to something handy that you can use while running and aiming else you will feel a bit hampered sometimes. Also if you use a joystick, bind mic to one of your left hand buttons so your right hand can continue flying.

If you have a mic, please don't spam pointless crap, sing horrible music when your squad asks you to shutup, or yell and scream every death that "that was bullshit" etc. A few times is ok, but when you are annoying everyone I am more likely to kick you as a squad leader if you don't know how to use your mic. Don't be childish

Edit: Oh yea a good mic will cost you only like 15 bucks so there's really no reason not to have one. Check the frequency response on the back paper of the package to make sure it has a good range - sometimes they sell really junky ones, and sometimes they advertise frequency responses that are out of the audible range (e.g. they just wana put big numbers on the package lol) - both are a waste. Get something in the 2K or 5Khz to 20KHz range.
