I'm sure alot of you were already aware that new architecture goes through a few revisions before finalized. The AM2 will be no different. For awhile now, I've been resolute in putting together a new system in early 2007 (as mine works fine for now), but now I'm justified.

Exactly. The first revisions aren't going to offer much of a boosted performance other than a few percentage points, but parts may just be cheaper than for socket 939. Perhaps future AM2 processors like the FX-64 will be hungry for DDR2.

if u have ddr1 dont go to AM2, yet

if u have ddr2, its up to u to decide if u want conroe or AM2

gg latency?

And I'm hard pressed to even use my 2 gigs unless I'm trying to fill it up...

although there is a nice benefit to having 2 gigs for the newer games etc out there.  Which I still need to upgrade to sometime soon... I have great OCing 2x512 (Mushkin Redline PC4000 sticks).  Although with 3dMark06 and BF2 the games/benches really do take advantage of having more ram.  I am looking forward to AM2, although I did just watercool my system this winter so I will have plenty of time to wait for the revisions to come out before I hop onto a new bandwagon.

Your friend is definitely strange.

I doubt it's going to suck that bad... but I do know that it's not going to do much for performance at the start.  The early glimpse at the models being released along with the clock speed indicated that there'll be very little in performance differences clock for clock between S939 and S-AM2.  The article at AnandTech even proves that.  So while we'll be getting a new socket that uses DDR2, performance will remain on par with the DDR counterpart.

It's too bad that there isn't much improvement over older DDR memory.  Ironic too, that I was looking forward to socket AM2... only to see that performance improvement is only negligible.  But I guess I was expecting too much out of a new interface.  I should've seen it at the start when I saw the models being launched.

For the moment, this is a good stepping stone for AMD and will act as a placeholder for things to come.  By the time their next generation processor is ready, their memory controller will have matured well enough to bring out the most of DDR2.
