whichever you buy, it will work fumping awesome in bf2 (same for every other games and it will most likely last you years)

but XTX's too dang expensive..

but i guess you got money eh?

if i were you i'd go with 7900 just because i can SLI it up in the future (yea.. crossfire.. but it sucks)
SLI = Useless unless ur getting it NOW, when the 8 series come out, the 7900gtx may drop its price to 400usd and G80 will be 500-600... and it will be nearly as fast as two 7900gtx (SLI) and the G80 has DX10 and SM4.0... so would you want to SLI 7900gtx now?

A single 7900GT should be enough to hold anyone over.

I have a funny little story about onboard graphics.

I have a 256MB Radeon 9800 Pro and a MSI K7N2G-ILSR which is an nforce2 mobo with nvidia onboard graphics. When I first tried it (I got the graphics card delivered a few days later) with unreal tournament it ran at a really fast speed, then later when I installed the 9800 and ran UT it actually ran at a lower framerate. (ran it using opengl iirc)

Take from that what you will.

From what I've seen and heard, ATI is really good at hitting the benchmarks but Nvidia is better for playing games.  I would go with Nvidia - I bought a 7800GTX a couple of months back.

I made the mistake of buying "top-of-the-line" with the 6800 Ultra (back in Nov '04 when they were really hard to get). But I'm not at all sad, as the card has lasted me this long.

But I'd stay away from the current GTX and XTX's unless you have a huge pile of cash, don't care about Shader Model 4, and don't care to upgrade until the G90.

You had old drivers left behind, or something was not configured properly.  There is no onboard video in that generation that could beat the 9800 Pro, and it doesn't matter that it was OGL.

I dream of the day when processes get so cheap that everything is just on the motherboard without any performance loss...

Upgrade time would just be for the mainboard, CPU, or both.

Ehehe.

No.

The machine at the time was brand new and it was a fresh installation of windows.

Plus, it's what I do for a living. So somehow I think I had everything setup perfectly. I think it was just a case of the opengl drivers at the time being much better for nvidia cards at the time and Unreal Tournament doesn't really take advantage of any of the features of the 9800.
