I have an ati 9550 (power cycle). Im upgrading due to black areas appearing after an hour or so of play. Plus I have settings on low etc, draw distance 90%.

I did have an 9800 pro but that broke last week and pc world have offerd me an exchange. I have found the card mentioned above in a shop for £120. I don't buy online and being an agp user I'm limited to what I can choose.

an advice from me is get a good upgrade to pci-e... but if u dont have the money, it'll be better to get an 6600gt to save money for future upgrades

Thanks ninja.  Im learning more and more about the inside of pc's.  Its become very apparent that agp is dying.    I havent got the finances at the moment but as soon as I have, will probably replace the motherboard to pci or even just complete new system whilst selling this one to help fund the new.

Thanks again.

X850 XT
why not try looking at the Geforce 7600 GT? or the X1600 XT?

im sure not to be honest, erm... i got worried about compatability and thought ati would be worth sticking with, ive since realised that bf2 supports the x850 xt platinum but it doesnt say anything about the card i was looking at which i guess was a saphire, not sure if theres a difference. im tempted just to get the x800 xt cos it specifically says it'll work with my pc......    good call on those cards, but it doesnt say if they're compatable in the bf2 manual,? are they?

Geforce 6800XT AGP is a piece of (banned word)... If you want to speed up your rig take a 7800GS 256 MB (if possible the overclocked versions, about 280-360 €). This will result in at least 50% more performance. The 7800GS is the fastest AGP Chip at 1024 x 768 atm, altought X850XT got better graphics quality.

lol this is ridiculous... imagine you buy a geforce 7800GTX 512MB-SLi for at least 800 Bucks and a game like BF2 (wich isnt the hardwarekiller althought) doesnt run (excluded driverissues)... Pure holocaust!!!

In your opinion should I get the 6600gt instead then?

7600 GT or the X1600 XT, right so their new then.. ok but think im gonna buy the x800 xt, cause i know its compatable with everything ive got..  although the 7600GT does look good

7600gt is better

If you want a rig that will work as well in two years a 7800GS would be the best choice for you!

If it´s a issue of the money, take a AGP 6600 GT 256MB (if aviable, sold out here in germany) or try to find a mint 6800GT at ebay or stuff (attetion, the old NV43-Chips (GT and ULTRA) for AGP are often too expensive atm)

ehm, 7600GT is faster than this X1600XT piece of crap. The only par for 7600-7800 Nvidias are the X1800 or X1900 (far to expensive).

7600GT is not AGP8x

and why should there be any issues with new GPUs on any game?! I´ve mounted a GF 7800GTX way before the official releasedate and there wasnt any official drivers and havent had any issues with HL2, CSS, CS1.6, BF1942, BFV

This is absolutley wrong! PCIE isnt faster and SLI isnt doublespeed of a single card. Dont write something if you dont have arguments...

Example?! First refer to this: http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?pid=263285#p263285

I have (among other systems):
AMD64 4000+ Socket 939 on ASUS A8N-SLI-Deluxe with one Leadtek 7800GT 256MB (now there are 2 of them) 2048MB, settings of GPU (core, shaderunits etc) like 7800GS (just for testing).

and now I have just build a third system last week:
AMD64 4000+ Socket 939 on Gigabyte (blah blah dont know yet) with one Leadtek 7800GS 256 MB and 2048MB

guess what:
3dMark05 is 192 Points "more", Aquamark is 1583 Points more an the fps: CS:S 12 BF2 6
(all settings of ultrahigh), the settings with SLI 7800 GT looks like this: 3dMark05 348 Points "more", Aquamark 2681 points "more", havent compared fps ingame yet.

So, please, dont try to tell us SLI is doublespeed of singlecard, or PCI-e is much faster than AGP8x. Only my ASUS N7800GT DUAL referenceboard was twice as fast as one single GT or GTX

@1927: take a 6600GT 256MB to safe some money but accept that this card is based on the "old" chipset and not every game (like f.e.a.r) will run smothly with hight settings, take a 7800GS if you want to safe the extra money for PCI-E Mainboard and GPU(s) and be able to run "newer" games above average settings.

simply to count:
AGP-count:
GF 6600GT 256=> ~200-240 €
GF 7800GS 256=>~289-360 €

PCIe-count:
Mainboard SLI 16xPCIe (add a brand)=>100-180 €
Mainboard SLI 32xPCIe (add a brand)=>190~270 €
GF7800GT 256 MB=> 300-360 €
GF7800GTX 256 MB=>390-550 €
install your OS and settings again=>priceless

you compare a NV70 with a NV43 based chipset and a highendcard 500 Buckes with a budgetcard 250 bucks... Its like to compare a Porsche GT with a VW Golf

Thanks "fon|sl4y3r".  I will look around tommorow and hopefully find the gt, I know there isnt that many instore and I dont want to wait all weekend while I await delivery online. If I have no success with that I will get the fx 6800 xt because as mentioned I don't want to wait and the (6600gt) isn't that readily available in the shops, on the shelf.  At least now I know which card is my 1st choice, I won't have any regrets if I end up with the fx 6600 xt. At least I tried getting the gt 1st.

Thanks for the help.

yea, 7600 GT is PCI-E Only, is better than X1600 XT, but costs more
anyway, for AGP, teh X1600 Pro is the best way to go

the Saphire X1600Pro you can buy here in germany isnt a par for any 7800GS, it is much more slower and better to compare it with a 6600GT. Even a X850 is faster than X1600series...
