I, personally, think that marriage is useless in modern day society for these reasons:

-Its a waste of money, with 10,000 dollars as the average price, and 500 dollars for a cake
-people can just live together, its no longer so taboo (unless in South Dakota)
-the only difference between that and living together, is a piece of paper
-this is 2006, not 1850
-the fact that the bride gets her last name taken away is shogunistic
-the whole idea of marriage is shogunistic
-wine and champaign is for preppies

I personally, being an 18 year-old pale faced nerd, never will get married, even with paris hilton

Post your opinions here

people get married because its the best way to show how dedicated, devoted and how in love with someone you are, all of which you havnt mentioned in your post.

People can show there devotion for eachother in other ways...

I, for example, write Paris Hilton Love letters that I never send, and probably never will

Marriage is a big culture thing, and I want to see it removed like I'd want an unnecessary brain surgury.

If two people love each other and want to get married, why stop them?

Your arguments are based on a number of false assumptions about marriage and relationships. Your reasoning is poor. Your conclusion, flawed.

I second that.

Marriage is a cultural icon but also a very personal decision. Those who want to get married, can, and those who don't want to, don't have to. It is also true, though, that there are still areas in the world ( even in western democracies ) where couples living together without being married are looked down upon.

Still, I usually means more to women than to men. I know a couple of guys who got married because their G/F asked them. The guys didn't really care, but ended up like "alright, if it means that much to you, let's do it."

Nevertheless, I do agree that the amount of money, time and effort put into the ceremony itself could be invested better...

Marriage? What is the point? I have plenty of life experience, (2 kids, partner for 4 years) and neither of us have ever felt the need to get married!
Yeah sure, it's a way of showing how devoted and in love you are, but surely the best things in life are free. Not costing thousands of pounds in a stupid overpriced ceremony.
I can appreciate that some couples feel so insecure that they need the bit of paper to show they have something in life, where as others do actually do it as a gesture of love and affection. Some get forced into it by religion and others do it to make money.
But what really fucking annoys me is the fact that in order to qualify for certain tax benifits or other government benifits I have to get married, why the fuck do I have to do that??? (P.S.) I dont mean benifits as in unemployment benifit or just generally sponging off the government benifit, I mean benifits like what Joe Normal and his missus get, all because they got married.
Would go into this more, but I'm at work and really need to do some, maybe edit later

And marriage doesn't even have to be a religious thing, many Athiests/Agnostics believe in it.

well, to begin with, marriage has always been a religious concept, and the benefits one receives from his government for marrying are only testament (sic) to the non-existent separation of church and state.

Why should I receive a tax break from my government because I am married ? What makes married people so much more valuable for the nation ? The ( most likely ) answer: children, i.e. future taxpayers and soldiers.

It is vitally important for every nation to ensure its own existence. A sufficient rate of birth is the most important prerequisite for that, and since married couples will most likely also have children, it is only logical for the nation to promote marriage ( aka family values ) and give benefits to those who get married.

That how I see it, at least...

it does ? why are so many couples getting a divorce then ?  If the relationship doesn't work, it doesn't work, wether you are married or not.

I don't believe in marriage as a necessity, but I'm not going to try to disuade those that want to get married.

Then again, at least in the US, the statistics of divorce hover right around 50%.

Also realize that many states in the US have common law marriage laws.  If you have a partner with which you cohabitate, have a sexual relationship, pay bills, and buy items together (furniture, appliances, vehicles, home, etc.) you will be considered married under a common law marriage.  The lenght of time for this varies, but in most states that have common law marriage laws this is usually 3-5 years.

As for the name change parts, in the US it is becoming more and more common to see women take both names, and it appears like this:  [maiden name]-[married name]

I am saying that it is wrong how wester society forces the steriotype that "every little girl dreams about her wedding" on small children

In a way, its almost deciding things for them, especially if they are forced to go to a wedding as a young child

Its disturbs me when they would make a 2 or 5 year old wear a suit and tie or a dress

Ties are stupid!

And, it is annoying how living together is so taboo, along with a single indapendant female being taboo to conservatives

rubbish, in The Netherlands women may keep their own name, and even the children may be named after her.

Ahh marriage. At 22 I've been married twice and divorced once. I have nothing further to say.

Marriage is a patriarchal anachronism that will be replaced as an institution during this century, in direct corrolation with the decline of religion as an ideological state apparatus (at least in the West).
