My brother picked up a simple Logitech headset and this thing fucking owns!

I'm not too sure how well anyone can hear me, but I now love commanding even more.

The obvious factor that makes it worthwhile is having squad leaders with headsets. They're personally asking for supplies on their armor, asking for a UAV at a flag, telling me where they are going next, etc

I played at LEAST 20 rounds with a 4-5 squad leaders on Karkand that allowed us to win them all. Even as MEC who I thought always loses, we won every time we played, making sure no one got back to the gatehouse. (32 map) I actually switched over TO MEC for the first time in my life just to command with some of these guys when the server reset the teams every 10 rounds or so.

There was this English/Scotish who always asked nicely for supplies via VOIP, another guy who went by Lohung that I spent a dozen or so rounds just talking and telling him how to get certain badges and about the sniper unlocks while he defending the perimeters, and even one squad leader who didn't have a mic but thanked me via the Q button as well as other things to keep us working together.

I found it interesting to hear accents from around the country and how different they all are. Southerners sound awesome lol.

Though if anyone can tell me why when talking to my squad, the mic icon on the upper right turns red or something?

yeah i found out that my PS2 headset works on my pc, i hate the voip tho, teamspeak is much better. and how much time do you have to be playing "a dozen or so rounds?"

as for the icon turning red, as best i can tell its when you talk to loud. at least that what it seems like to me....

hmm great that you had so much fun and I usally love it as well, if squad leaders work together with the commander over voip but sadly enough most of em just ignore the possibilty ><

I started to use that one that i got from SOCOM, but i didn't like the sound.

Karkand rounds go fast when one team is beating up on the other.

i.e. When the US doesn't load up their humvee's and go around the main fire fight, instead they spawn at the nearest point to the Hotel, allowing my arty to get massive kills.

or when the MEC allows you to take all their bases from behind without realizing it.

I loved how when I was commading for the US, three or four squad leaders would go around back, each going to a different base, while i spotted enemies for them. All while they said "this is easy" or "thanks commander"

Got a good sense of teamwork that night

I got something like 1500 points in two days from commanding on various maps using the voip ingame. My only gripe is that whenever I've done at all well as commander and our side wins with everybody taking a large number of points (with me in the top three in the round), some twit with a higher rank but no idea what to do takes the commander's slot in the next round and we lose heavily. Sigh.

Mine too.  I'm going to try installing a soundcard and try it from that instead of the on-board sound on my motherboard.  I run the audio setup thingy and it works fine.... I set the levels, yada-yada.  But it won't work when I run the actual game.  It is so frustrating.  I have printed out dozens of "tips" from different people all over the forums and I'm going to try them all, one by one, tonight.

As for the headsets, I recommend Logitech USB Headset 250 - works great and simple. Costs about 45$, but it's really the best you can get for this money.

I know what causes microphones to turn off. Everytime I join a server, BF2 turns off my mic at the Windows Volume Control. To fix this, alt+tab in the loading screen and double click on the volume control on the Windows toolbar (looks like a speaker). Unclick the mute button and your mic will be back on.

I ALWAYS try to play on servers that have VOIP.  Commanding with actual verbal orders is a lot easier than the cookie cutter Com Rose.

I have the PS2 microphone hanging around my neck with the mouthpiece tilted up, and a good pair of headphones on.  Perfect sound in/sound out set up!

Well headsets do cause some hearing problem if u turn up too loud. Thats why i use a mic only.

I got myself a Logitech USB 350 headset a month back, it was the best decision I ever made. The whole interactive aspect of the game just became that much more interesting when I became able to communicate with squad members, or commanders.

One recommendation: Don't buy a USB one like me!

Reason being that if you are sometimes forgetful, and leave the damn thing unplugged just as you start loading up bf2, then realise you wanted it in, it's too late. You'll have to quit the game then start it up again, and be forced to sit through EA's logo once more.

BF2 doesn't like USB headset drivers when it's already loaded your standard audio ports.

I also have a cheap-o 16$ Logitech headset. Although the sound blows, it works pretty well.

I have only rarely played on one of these mythical VOIP servers. A commander that talks through his mic. Squadleaders working together to accomplish a goal? Wow, where is this fairy tale land. Haha. When you find a great server, it makes all the difference. Glad you had such a great experience. Now stop dropping arty on me!!

The icon turns red if you talk to loud or too long, release and press again to keep going.

Now I have not used a headset with this game, but I have a good sound card on one of my two machines and I can hear what poeple are saying over the speakers. I do know that it makes all the difference in the world if you have a commander calling things out and squads that follow orders. That IMO is one of the best parts of this game is when you find a team that you really click with and yes I would say that the mics help that out greatly!

This is EVIL_STYX saying, we will see you on the battlefield!

I have a question, I have a SOCOM headset and when I get it going on BF all I can get is the headset speaker to work. That is why I don't use mine because BF just sounds better on my speakers. My Q: would be how do you get both to work at the same time?

Thx in advance,

Open control panel -> sound and audio devices -> Audio Tab... change the sound playback dropdown box to your sound card.

You have to have the headset plugged in first.

I can't believe people can actually play this game without some form of VoIP, either in game or Teamspeak/Ventrillo!

Personally, I think a commander without voice is a crippled commander.

As a commander, you shouldn't even need to issue orders. It should be enough to simply to tell your squads "Black Hawk going around north to MEC Airfield, I'll try to spot it for you" and watch a jet or attack heli go clean it up.

As a squad leader, try typing "Can you spot that sniper by the airfield?" or "Is Factory all clear now?" and see whether you get a response... then try asking again using voice.

I've commanded Wake Island games with a full nine squads, continually scanning and keeping them infomed of troop movements. Every now and then telling squad leaders exact positions of the enemies hiding spots. The yankees didn't stand a chance.
It was hilarious reading the enemy's chat messages - "The chinese team is full of hackers!!!"
... that's how it should seem if you've got a decent commander!

Try this headset out http://www.battle-fields.com/article.php?artid=92

Cheap yet seems to put some more expensive ones to shame.
