No, in the UK 3rd party injury and damage insurance is mandatory.

So glad I'm not starting out in driving now.
So if some nutjob without 3rd party damage insurance totals some rich guys McLaren F1 they are basically in debt for the rest of their lives?
That is correct.
16 year olds are too stupid to understand this though.

Me and most my friends got ours when we turned 16 and there was nothing insane about it.... actually it allowed us to get jobs and be responsible.

Your argument is invalid. I had and still have a job since I was 16 and did not need a car for it.

All 16 year olds think they are old enough to have that responsibility...

But the majority are not...

Started driving at 15, got my learner's at 16 and my restricetd full a month before I turned 17. Still am stuck with it because of the backlog from a half-year strike by the examiners.

That would be a permit unless you do live in Idaho, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Carolina, or South Dakota.

So SA has no practical assesment of a drivers ability done by MVR staff?

Seriously.......

Its tightened up a bit now.

Note no qualifed instructor time is required, and your dad signing off on 50 hrs instruction is hardly a big deal.

You can avoid the VORT by getting signed off by your instructor, no chance of that being fudged...
Thats how my sister got her license, all legit BTW, but her instructor taught her a bunch of dangerous and worng things.
http://www.drivesmartdrivingschool.com. … s_vort.htm

So yes, you can get a license without being assessed by anyone except your Dad and your driving instructor.

It was the testing thing I was stuck on.

For many years they required that up here in the NT and it's not like we have the most stringent road safety standards up here. Then again, at remote police stations they'll still issue you a licence on the spot. When I say remote, I'm talking over 500km from the nearest community numbering 200 people or more.

Tbh road safety laws are a bit gimped here, then again, we have to have yearly roadworthy inspections for vehicles, which SA doesn't.

What sort of engine problems?

Is it an Alfa Engine, or one of those rebranded Saab ones? It's all about the TS 3.5 V6 - outstanding engine.

All my problems have been with suspension (and wheels falling off - but that was kind of suspension related)....
