What country is bonkers enough to let 16 year olds drive?

And Australia....

Cars are cheap, insurance is optional, 16 year olds are stupid (search 'Sh!fty') result: mayhem.

Would save a lot of time and probably paperwork.

L Plate - age 16 (120 hour log book)

Red P - (only available after 12 months on Ls, and 120 successfully loged, and the passing of a drivers test), while on reds, speeding = insta 3 month suspension.

Green P - (Only available after an individual is on their reds for 12 month, exclusing suspension time, touchscreen hazard test needs to be passed aswell)

Black, or Full Liscense, (After 2 years on greens, another driving test taken)

So if you keep exactly to the dates possible, you'd have your full liscense by 20, but the average is like 21/22

Varies state by state.
Bear in mind no-one but no-one does the 120 supervised hours, Daddy just signs the form and they're done.
Many don't even do the instructor hours. Daddy just gives the instructor some cash and it gets signed off too.
No driving tests required in South Australia, only paper theory tests
There is no regular vehicle roadworthiness inspection either..... so we have morons tooling around with their rear brakes disconnected to help with their burnouts.

Insurance is optional in SA. Mandatory third party injury insurance comes with the rego - assuming people bother with that - otherwise insurance is optional.
Should you cause a major accident you're royally screwed, but if you're 16 and just bought a V8 with mag wheels and cherry bomb exhaust chances are insurance isn't a priority.

Pfew, I just thought you meant that 3rd party insurance was optional

The insurance to cover your own loss is optional everywhere no? pretty common tbh...

Here in Denmark insurance costs so much that I'm better off not getting any for my MKII Golf... Since after 1 year of driving it insurance would have cost me the same as the car itself...

No, in the UK 3rd party injury and damage insurance is mandatory.
SA only 3rd party injury insurance is mandatory.

So glad I'm not starting out in driving now.

Doesn't change the fact that letting kids as immature as 16 year olds drive automobiles is an insane concept...

Seems pretty standard, "compulsory third party" with your rego, then you can have with an insurance company "fire and theft" and "comprehensive", usually. Comprehensive is if you fuck up, and can cover theft of contents depending on the company.

Oh and come to Victoria, you can't drive here till you're 18 with 120 hours.
