I just want to know what the general concensus is about VoIP. not teamspeak or TK(whatever that is). Just VoIP. and maybe some Ideas on what we(VoIP users/lovers) can do to increase the awareness and useability of it....

any ideas would be great!

I understand if not everyone uses VOIP to talk to their squadmates because either they don't have mics or they feel uncomfortable speaking to unknown people over the internet or they just don't what to say. However I don't understand why alot of people still have VOIP turned off so they can't even hear their squadmates.

Nothing is quicker and more accurate about warfare than real time information. A Squad Leader instructs their squad to spawn as certain kits according to the situation. Tell their squad where they are spawning and what ther objective is. The more communication there is about the surroundings while in battle the better you can defeat the enemy.

So don't ignore VOIP. Turn it on. Even if you don't use it at least turn it on so you can hear people who do use it.

Teamwork or VOIP squads are often where they are used the most.
Commanders who use it effectively are invaluable to the squad leaders that also use it.

What Is Voip???

I'm Not That New, But Haven't Been Able To Figure Out What It Is Yet, How To Use It, Or How To Even Get It.

I'm Sure It Would Be Useful, So What Do I Need To Do To Get It And Use It??
And Why Don't People Just Use The In-game Speak?

VOIP is Voice Over IP.  It allows you to talk with people in real time in the game.  My ISP is Bellsouth and they have regular phone service and internet.  They are going to slowly transition all of their home phone lines to VOIP, so it has more applications than just gaming.  I am not sure if I remapped my keys, but hold down B to talk with squad members and if you are the squad leader you can talk to the commander by holding down V.

Some of our clan members turned off their VOIP because we use TS and most of us are in squads together.  Also some are tired of idiots talking excessively in VOIP.

maybe someone would be nice enough to write a VoIP users guide. I love VoIP. I also notice a great increase in productivity and wins when I use it as commander or Squad leader.

Can people in clans who use Teamspeak use VoIP as well, just map different keys? I know with BF1942 I used teamspeak in my clan and the LeftCtrl was my teamspeak key(never liked that auto talk thing) so if you map different keys could you use them both?

Yes, its possible to use Voip, and TS/Vent etc. I try and use Voip whenever i can, but i find a majority of ppl dont have it on. The squad and team works a lot better if u can actually talk, or atleast hear orders, rather than trying to type inbetween action.

One thing, i noticed yesterday, my Voip icon isnt showing when i talk. Or does it only show if someone else in squad has it active ? Im a bit confused with that bit.

I am fairly new to BF2, but already waaaaaaayyyyy too addicted.  In fact, I just upgraded my old P4-2.8 with 2 gig of ram and an eVGA 7800 GS Superclocked AGP card, and the difference is noticeable.
Anyway, I am not yet part of a clan, so most of my playing is with strangers.  But sadly, few of them use VoIP.  This surprises me because whenever I join a squad that is using VoIP, we are very successful.
I always try to join or create a squad, primarily for communication with leaders, but I have found that not many SLs or Commanders talk.  Is this because they are all on TeamSpeak or maybe don’t speak English?
I haven’t tried TeamSpeak yet, so maybe someone can explain it to me.  But since VoIP is already built into the game and available to everyone with a $10 mic and “B” and “V” keys, shouldn’t this be the obvious choice of leaders who want to be successful?
Someone let me know where I can play with talkers!

TS is a lot more versatile than the ingame Voip, u can talk to a whole team, seperate into squads. Even have whisper keys, so press say alt + b is just ur best bud,but b is whole team.
Also it uses less resources than the voip from what ive heard.
I use TS a lot with my other games. Basically u download the client, enter the ip, pw, name etc and ur away.

I don't use it because VOIP only works on Mic 1.  I kill mics with my current desktop layout.  If Mic 2 were supported by VOIP, I would give it a try.  The one thing I don't like about teamspeak is when someone is on the opposing team as you.

Some servers have their teamspeak info posted when you first join the server while it's loading the game.  just write down the address so you can enter the required info in teamspeak.

VOIP sucks in some regards as you can't talk to the quy in your tank who is in a different squad or lonewolf.  If they are on teamspeak it is totally possible to talk to them.

teamspeak client can be found here:  www.goteamspeak.com

I have it turned off and will stay that way. Not that I don't want to hear all the above, but because there is always one anoying guy that will make it useless.

Also, TS is better. As someone mentionned you can talk to everyone even if they are not in your Squad...

And I don't need VoIP to communicate with my team/squad... I can always quickly type key information.

While I respect your reasoning and I sympathize about that annoying guy because I know first hand many times what you are talking about. However Teamspeak is nice only if people know or care to be on Teamspeak. If this is true then most likely you are playing with your clanmates or your friends. That's grand and you are all in a squad together. Awesome. That's teamwork and I hope you keep doing it. However for the rest of us that don't have mates who play with us on a constant basis to fill a squad we have to rely on teamwork minded individuals who we meet in public servers. Here VOIP is the only alternative and Teamspeak/Ventrillo is not an option.

As for typing out to your squad. That goes back to my point that verbal audio communication is quicker and more easily understood. Typing takes time away from your reactions, is unclear and many do not see your commands when typed. Too much is scrolling past your screen to read each line. If there was a separate area that was ONLY squad communications then "maybe" it would be worth while typing.

Alas that does not work.

Also not having a Vehicle Comm. Blows serious ass and needs to be fixed badly!

As someone who enjoy's playing commander.  It's very important for poeple to at least have VOIP on.

I have noticed, when the commanders talk to there team, the win ratio is very high.

I only use it with people I know, I'll listen to others but prefer not to converse with them as I'm usually doing my own thing to help the team win.

When I hear a squeaky 13 year old voice , I join another squad. With people I know I work as a team & talk to them constantly.

I did work with some people I didnt know once but only cause I liked how they said "here comes trollmeat again kicking ass!"

No,  because I usually dont work in a squad,  cause it seems most of the time Im actually cooperating with the squad leader,  the squad leader 80% of the time,  using the mic,  asks us to follow him,  leads the whole squad to be killed,  by a tank,  artillery,  or whatever.  Finally I quit working in squads.

If Im squad leader,  I just press Q or T,  to ask them,  to defend this position,  or use T to like say something like "demolitions needed here".  If my squad cooperates,  I just type something like good job squad,  keep up the good work.

Sorry Im way off topic now....

But some times I wish I had a mic,  cause when Im a gunner or the co pilot on a fighter bomber,  we could corrodinate better.  But its ok, cause when he has a mic,  Im pretty fast at typing,  so I could live without a mic,  and having to hear some kid tell me how to play.

i use it sometimes when they try to talk to me or if im commander but honestly, it sounds like Sh*t and when i shout artillery when im commander, teamates still run into it. so whats the point if im the only one using it.

only use it if ppl are actually communicating, great tactical tool if u know how to use it properly. and that means no "i want some motherfucking chocolate milk bitch!"

I love VOIP.  When you have a whole squad working together, calling out objectives, enemies, and making plans, one squad can win a 32 player game.  I have seen it happen many times.

I have had a few "squeaky 13 year olds" who are better teamplayers than 98% of the people out there.  Shame on the 98%!   Squads are about communication and teamwork, GET IT ALREADY!

the biggest issue with VOIP is it's limited communication ability with others on your team.  Occassionallly I get separated from my squad for whatever reason then find myself working with another squad or lonewolf(ves).  In those cases I prefer teamspeak if they are on it with me.  Talking is so much easier and faster than typing.  I can type fairly fast too, and I think it's too slow.

I use both TS and VOIP routinely. As has been stated, fast, effective communication is key in working as a team. Where I find it particularly helpful is in the attack choppers. When flying with clan mates our effectiveness is significantly improved. Whenever I pick up a gunner who cannot hear me, or gun for a pilot who cannot hear me, it feels like a waste of a valuable asset as it is not being used to its full potential. Typing to your gunner while flying is a recipe for disaster!

Just my quick, useless, 2 cents.  There's a few guys I work with that also play BF2.  We've sort of created our own clan so we can spot each other more quickly and normally we form a squad based on our clan name.  We constantly use VOIP and it has vastly improved my game.  Check my stats and they look crappy but they've done nothing but improve since we started using VOIP.  We use it to communicate location of enemies especially if we get killed by one, what kits we're spawning in with or what kits someone else should spawn with, general situational info, where we're spawning, and just to b.s. about that one guy I killed, or this other guy that got run over by a tank, or whatever.  But mostly, we use it in the chopper.  I'm a decent gunner and two of the guys are exceptional pilots (especially when it comes to flying for the gunner).  And VOIP is invaluable when i'm in a chopper with one of them.  I can scan all over the place while in the mean time my pilot is setting me up for a shot with tv missle.  They just say "12 o'clock" and I know they have a target for me straight ahead.  Switch over, take the target, and back to gun.  It just works so perfectly, I can't imagine flying without it.  I will from time to time...if my pilots aren't playing or if someone else jumps in...but we never seem to live as long or get as many kills.

One thing I will say, originally I had my VOIP turned off because I was running the game on only 512mb of RAM and was trying to reduce lag.  So I can understand why some people have theirs turned off.  But I added a gig and holy crap...night and day.  All settings increased, VOIP turned on, etc. and no lag what so ever.

Anyway, there's my lengthy, worthless two cents.  Happy gaming.

i use it all the time mostly cause i like talking with the guys in the squad and having a nice laugh about how i died or just to have a nice chat with some people. it's fun, much more casual and makes it more fun when u just have fun talking then being all edgy and like AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH, the fucker killed me. as some guys scream over VOIP. which is odd... but watever just be like calm down guys, just go fish bowl after the game and calm down. better yet let's fish bowl now..

brb guys
