But that still does not explain the need for toilet paper to be wrapped around the dang muzzle/silencer!

Sorry man, I don't buy your arguement.  The L96A1 is still louder than any assault rifle when I'm firing it.  THere is no way it is silenced.

I'm wondering if any of the people who 'don't buy it' have ever fired a weapon, much less a silenced weapon. And this is coming from good ol' lefty-as-hell me. Actually, this has been on my mind lately too, and I'm glad someone else brought it up.

Now, for completely DIFFERENT reasons on why you would use supersonic ammo with a silencer in Battlefield 2, the answer is quite simple. As always, it's GAME BALANCE.

It always seemed to me they put a LOT more attention into sniping than anything else, making sure that it wasn't too over-powered nor completely useless. It would make sense for them to have put more attention into the sound, especially if some of their staff shoots long-rifles or hears them shot at ranges.

Why would you not load out on sub-sonic ammo?

A) Less damage. The impact of a higher velocity bullet aside, a good part of the damage indicated SHOULD be hydrostatic shock. But really, in that case many of the weapons weilded in BF2 should kill in one hit. If a weapon firing subsonic ammunition hit someone, and they are accounting for this vast difference in kill potential, then subsonic ammo would be near useless.
B) You still have the damage directional indicator to help pinpoint the sniper. Which, lets be honest, if you got pegged by a sniper in life, you wouldn't be running around or thinking straight at all, much less able to locate and shoot back at the asshole who put a new hole in your leg.
C) It's a bolt action rifle. In BF2, bolt action rifles are a severe handicap with the game system, since you're not guaranteed to bring a man down and he'll keep running fine. Lessen the damage, and you got a useless hunk of metal in your hands.

Anyway, it DOES sound like a suppressed rifle firing supersonic ammunition. My headphones are dead, so until I get a new pair I can't test for sure. My directional sense with my speakers (even with 5.1s) is terrible. What I want to know now is why the other rifles don't get the fancy boom (or KRAKOOOOOOWWWWWW) of the bullet ripping through the air.

I know it seems dumb to say it, but the rifle acts very much like a suppressed L96, also called the AWS, here is the evidence.

Observation #1. The sound of the weapons is like "tsk.....KOOOOOOOOOW"  This mimics a suppressed sniper rifle exactly to a T, because the report of the weapon is muffled down to a simply "tsk" but the supersonic round still rips past the sound barrier leaving you with that awesome supersonic crack echoing off in the distance.  When on the battlefield you can easily hear the echoing of a L96 firing, but unless you are right next to the guy, I doubt you hear the muffled "tsk" report from the shot.
I believe the descriptive term you're looking for is "onomatopoeia."

Wikipedia has an article. A bit of trivia, but "yiff" is the most infamous onomatopoeia on the internet. If you don't know what it means, then I would advise not looking it up...or you will lose three years out of your lifespan for the laughter that will ensue.

I spent 6 years in the Air Training Corps shooting the L85A1 and L85A2, 4 years shooting in competitions with the L85A1 and A2, a week working in an armoury on work experience and i've fired 30 rounds from an L96A1. I'm also now a member of the Territorial Army Commandos, getting plenty of shooting in with the L85 and verious other small arms, and I'm considering joining the Royal Marines. I've never fired an AWS but i've heard silenced weapons fired and neither the silenced or unsilenced weapons in the game sound anything like their real life counterparts.

My personal opinion on the L96A1 in game is that it was given the sound it has simply because it sounds different to the other rifles, if DICE had given us a silenced AI then I would imagine it would be called an AWS
so that we know what we are getting.

As for people comparing pictures of real L96's and the in game ones - i'm sure we can hardly rely on DICE for such attention to detail (they have made plenty of other mistakes regarding weapons in the game)
