every time you go into the mission control worldview, when you start a mission, and at the start of every turn

which means if your squad was mostly slaughtered in the last turn, you have to go back 2 saves

First terror mission at Moscow. I'm pretty sure saving all the civilians is a complete impossibility unless I cheat.

Also, FUCK THE TUTORIAL MODE. India requests a sat, but it already had me put up a sat somewhere else, and I had to do a bunch of bullshit before I was able to de-grey my options and build another sat receiver...which won't be completed in time to give India what they want.

Oh well, revenge for bad Microsoft customer service.

i think you need to save ~11 or 12 to get an excellent rating for saving civvies. granted it's hard after the first couple of terror missions, but once your A-team and B-teams get established, it should be pretty simple

First Terror mission I did my then A-squad was wiped out immediately after contact with the first two Chrysalids. First guy went down in the first move, tried and failed to kill them and two more went down. Last dude fled. Now though I splat those fuckers like they're nothing.

I've never saved all the civilians though, I think 15/18 is my best.

Encountered my first Sectopod, (Mechwarrior-looking robot thing.) Fuck those guys with a barge pole. Almost cost me my top Sniper and a dude I was training up to be my back-up Support. Love the Double Tap Sniper perk though, invaluable when you're in a tight spot like that. Meanwhile trainee Support guy saved my best Assault dude from a certain splattering with a strategically-thrown smoke bomb. I get why they're useful now.

I think taking a bunch of runner supports might help during those missions, but it kind of kills your firepower. Maybe researching new weapons would help.

i find that having a sniper with "disabling shot" really helps during those moments

that, and plasma snipers

Plasma weaponry is pretty neat. From what I've heard one of the best ways to deal with Sectopods is a Sniper with Double Tap, Damn Good Ground and Executioner - especially if they are in a good nest.

I think the most valuable lesson I've learned so far is to know when to retreat. I think when I was fucking up really badly before I would hold my ground and make the best of the position I was in, even if I was caught in a really bad area. Now I retreat to an easily defensible position and either reassess my approach or create a kill-zone for enemies to fall into. It's worked a treat so far. Only lost one guy when I was ambushed recently but he was some Captain I got as a reward for a mission so fuck him, those newbies never last.

I was doing pretty good until the terror mission. I usually go with a defense shotgunner, distance sniper, crack shot sniper, 2x rocket heavy and a support. I'm going to try it again to see just how many civvies I can save.

Gotta love how they won't move until you tap them on the shoulder, and then they run AWAY from your transport.

i might try that, i usually just use disabling shot to ensure that the giant "fuck your day up" cannon doesn't go fucking my day up (though, granted, you have to relocate if he starts launching rockets at you)

it helps if you upgrade your weapons, even just up to lasers

My main squad generally consists of one Support, one Sniper, one Assault armed with a shotgun, one Assault armed with a rifle, a Heavy and an 'optional' slot that is used depending on what I want to achieve, including the training of back-up soldiers. If pressed I'd fill it with another Support soldier, mostly because when trained up they can carry more than one item.

Definitely concentrate on upgrading weaponry, even before worrying about armour. Ideally your guys won't get shot at all if you're careful enough but they need to be able to dole out damage whatever the situation. Also in Terror missions I'd swap out a Sniper for another class. One should be enough to deal with any far away threat before it gets close and deal with things like Cyberdiscs and with the prevalence of enemies like Chryssalid and Berzerkers it's particularly useful to deal out some close-range damage.

Last screenshot I took of my guys. Vargas was my original, and I was going for the one-guy-enters-all-missions achievement, but he was wounded for one, and now my highest ranking soldier is a pissed off British sniper. Guess I can try for the valkyrie thing on an easy mission.

Only now, at the end...do you understand.

I think if I'd make any changes to this game, it would be the ability to launch more than one interceptor after a UFO, to be able to fly your own interceptor on shit the autoresolve AI would just fail at, and to have more than one skyranger at your disposal so you can deploy to more than one mission per event.

e: Also, autoresolve would be nice for those spam missions that you know are just going to be a piece of cake.

And that's about as good as it gets. I ran through this about three or four times. If I get perfect roles on my aim, I could probably save 16 instead of 15, but there's no fun in reloading turn after turn to get it.

e: a more recent shot of my go-to troops. I left out the second sniper because I'd like to try smoke spam.

15/18 is the best I've got too. I'm playing with Ironman on so I can't do redo-s but I don't think I could do any better than that.

This is my main team:

https://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f266/Tyferra/xcomteam24102012_zps645a972b.jpg

Or was anyway. This was the second to last mission Sgt. Jesus 'Scout' Garcia took part in. The lad showed such promise but alas got his head blown off by a heavy plasma cannon wielded by a Muton Elite. He shall be missed. Fortunately the mission he died on had the reward of a Support Captain so things even out I guess. She has proven herself adequate so far.

Also "Prototype" Rodrquez, (since re-named "Magnet" due his tendency to attract projectiles,) is interchangeable with my other Heavy, Kostya "Beans" Volkov. I think I like Beans a bit more.

Kathleen 'Needle' Connolly, Anton 'Anvil' De Jong and Liz 'Ghost' Tyrell have been my stalwarts since the start, I'd be gutted if I lost them.

That's my teamcomp as well. 2x support and 2x assault. Having guys who can move huge distances and shoot is a lifesaver in this game, and medkits are OP at higher difficulties.

Best I've done in a terror mission is 17/18. I think getting the perfect 18 is pretty much impossible unless you have prior knowledge of where all the aliens spawn (i.e reload scum) and what turns they autotrigger on.

Fuck. The. Brazil. Terror. Mission. There's no way I can see to doing this short of having a full squad of jetpacks, which I'm not even close to getting yet. I can only beat it with good. Excellent is not doable.

e: 5 civilians die and you get a "good" instead of "excellent." The fuck are you supposed to do when the entire map is full of people-impregnating spider ants that would rather munch on a good civvie rather than your troops? I even went back with an invulnerable unit cheat just to see if it could be done. Jump jets are NEEDED.

Eh, screw it. I took a C for that month because I didn't have air tech to take out a couple fast saucers.

Col. Connolly can use a medkit three times and since she get sent up the front quite a bit she deserves a little extra protection. With the other Support having a fourth use of the medkit it's been enough to get me through. Col. Robinson also has a vest because he's a pretty hard worker and often attracts a lot of heat, it's saved his life a few times too.

I keep a grenade on hand after an incident when I was deep in the shit and two of my soldiers were being suppressed. The grenade's radius happened to cover the two doing the suppressing. With those two injured I could reposition my two soldiers without them being shot at and managed to take the two enemies out. Since then I've kept one soldier with a grenade just in case but it doesn't get used much.

I just got a couple of Firestorms. Haven't had the chance to use them yet but hopefully I can finally shoot down one of the big fuckers.

Why not an alien grenade?
