So I tried to play Battlefield 2 for the first time in a while, and when I tried to join a server (I'd recently updated PB) I got the message "Your connection to the server has been lost", I thought I'd try again, so I hit connect, and I was able to join a server just fine, until I was kicked for pnkbstrb.exe failing to initialize. I've re-installed PB and BF2 multiple times, and my problem hasn't been solved, it seems that I can get PB running fine before BF2, and as soon as I try to join a server after fixing PB, I get "Your connection to the server has been lost", followed by pnkbstrb.exe mysteriously disappearing from services and my computer. I'm running XP SP3, Avast!, Windows Firewall (PB and BF2 on exceptions list for both) and using a D-link DIR-615 Wireless router with a hard line connection to my computer. I hope you can help me, I love this game.

sounds like avast is deleting the service.  try disabling any AV programs you have running before installing PB and try again...

I tried uninstalling Avast! and running BF2 without an AV installed, and still got the error. I have never gotten an alert from Avast! either. Thanks for your input though.

Did you fully update punkbuster? http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?pa … rt-bf2.php

Also have you done the correct install of BF2?

I though it was:

BF2
1.41
SF (if necessary)
1.41 (if necessary)
1.5

THEN update punkbuster

(or something like that, I don't remember anymore)

I've got the Complete Collection DVD, so the install isn't a  problem, as it automatically does the install, as to Punkbuster, I've downloaded all of the files for my OS, and that hasn't stopped this mysterious problem. Thanks for trying to help me guys, I appreciate it.

Did you try the PBSetup program from evenbalance instead of downloading the files individually for your specific OS?

Once you install it, run it and add BF2 to the game list. Then check for updates.
