Always admit your fault and apologize for it. Cops and judges don't like people who pretend to be ignorant of the law. I had a summons in NJ once for speeding. The judge was nice enough to lower the recorded speed I was doing in order to put me into a lower bracket of offense. Still had to shell out $290 to the state of New Jersey. Bleh.
no, don't always admit your fault.
when you go for a court summons, you have 3 ways to plead-
not guilty
guilty
guilty with a reason
not guilty will resort in a court date for trial. the judge will tell you that if you are found guilty, the state will try to give you the maximim punishment
guilty will resort in the judge assessing you a fine. If you are lucky enough to have the city attorney present, get ready to pay the maximum fine. If not, usually the judge will give you a slap on the wrist and the minimum sentence
guilty with a reason will resort in the judge giving you no lenience, could resort in you pissing the judge off and assessing the maximum fine/sentence. It virtually never leads to a reduction.
Usually it's stupid assholes who think they are on trial that plead guilty with a reason. If you plead guilty, the judge will not care about the details of the crime and how there was no way you could avoid it. Simply accept responsibility (don't make excuses) and move on.
Things that could impact the judges assessment-
how you dress
how many assholes plead guilty with a reason before you get up there
how many assholes try to argue with the judge before you get up there
how close to the end of the day or lunch you go up there
