I really just don't know, so don't think that I think your job is pointless or anything.
My role in my department accounts for about 33% of revenue of the business. Out of all the revenue streams we are the highest intake - company turnover is around $150 million annually - and the business is growing at around 20% per year based on the previous two years. It's big business. Wine Advisor is a sales role to be sure, with ongoing education about wine to be able to further recommend wine to customers. Ultimately we are better able to sell wine if we know and understand the product well. There are plenty of opportunities for career development and different paths to follow. As the business owns everything from contracts with growers to our own winery, bottling and packing plant, sales and marketing team and courier service I could move up to a department manager or get some further education to become a vintner and go work actually making wine, for example.

I feel like I just read a brochure

That was just off the top of my head, typed into my phone whilst in bed.

Senior management (including the company director) started out in the company doing the same role that I am. All the middle management have achieved their position through promotion or transfer from the daughter company in NZ. One of the top performers in my department has been there just under 12 months and said he's taking home $1500 - $2000 a week. Pretty damn good for a job where no qualification (ie. degree) is necessary, and you are working your own set shifts at 25-35 hours a week.

Sales is tough when you're starting out. High burnout rate until you get some regular customers.

We've got a six month probation period and it's more about KPI than revenue to start with. Then our target is $380 p/h. The top performers are averaging $700-$800 p/h, calculated over the financial year (in Australia it is from July 1 to June 30 the following year).

Funny and interesting thing/family moment happened today:

Back story: I picked up my defective car battery from Advance Auto this morning after they tried to charge it and then I found out they couldn't honor the warranty on it because they somehow had no record of me and my dad buying it from the website, so my dad offered to buy me another battery and I drove over to his house.

After we came back from the Pep Boys because they didn't have the battery I needed, I reinstalled the old battery back in my car again, and he told me a little later on the way to get something to eat that when I opened the hood, he caught the scent of a nostalgic underhood smell he remembered from long before when he used to work on cars with his now-deceased father whom I never met, and he laughed and said the car do-it-yourselfer thing must've skipped a generation because he smelled that smell with his father and he smelled it with his son but he never smelled it by himself.  Me and my dad aren't terribly close but I could tell it all hit a switch inside him and he became a lot more happy and talkative for the rest of the time.  Just kind of a cool little thing that happened

That's amazing Bugz! What city is it in/near? I could perhaps hope to afford a place like that here in Toronto if I saved for the next 10 years...

In one of the west suburbs of Ottawa. I find out tonight or tomorrow whether I quality for the mortgage. I'm putting 20% down and I've got the highest credit rating my financial adviser has seen for someone my age so I've got my fingers crossed.
