our grades are done on a 0.0-4.0 scale here. you get your mark reported on a 0-100 scale then your GPA is calculated based off where each of the 0-100% marks fall on this 0-4 scale. its really strange. but 4.0 is the highest mark you can get

how many people as a proportion get given an A-/A+ grade? i guess that's the only way to really compare systems.

are you going to do a masters? i understand 'good' science degrees roll on to 1-2 year masters really easily.

its an almost mandated 69% average per course plus or minus a few percent. the percentage given an A I really dont know though, but based off of that not many I'd assume...

its actually really competitive here, i'll likely apply but i'm not sure i'd follow through with it. its not all that likely i'd do hard science for the rest of my life

In Aus a 75 would be considered an American 3.6 and 80 would be a 4.0. Most people get a 65...

theyre still percentage points... but on a different scale

P= Pass
CR = Credit
D= Distinction (not many people get these)
HD= High Distinction (Even fewer get these...)

You get a high distinction (85) average you're on the deans list. You finish your degree with a distinction average they add your diploma with a "Bachelor of XXX with distinction."

yes. and people who get 80%+ on exams are the kids who get 80%+ on assignments anyway

Stateside unless Bell curved is:
C = 70% = passing average = 2
B = 80% = above average = 3
A = 90% = excellent = 4

A 70 is a fail?

In my classes there's about 1% that get in the 90s. I don't think I've had more than 1 or 2 90s so far - nobody gets straight 90s. We just have different grading schemes.

in the UK only the top 10-15% of the class ever get above a 70 (a 70 is the boundary mark for a 1:1, a first, summa cum laude, a 4.0GPA, etc.)

you rarely see anything over 75. we were told in our first year that anything over that mark implies a piece of work with journal publication potential.

i think it works the same for maths/sciences, too, even though obviously they are expected to get a lot more than 70% of their tests correct, on average. i think it is all calculated with 70 being the 'a-grade' high mark.

Yes different from stateside but I'm trying to understand where getting just a little over half the answers correct is acceptable.

It was cakewalk for me getting on the Dean's list.

different colleges mark at radically different levels, too. a lot of mid-ranking colleges will push a bunch of their students to get 'good' degrees, i.e. grade inflation. it makes them look better performing on paper. top unis don't feel such a need to inflate their stats. or they basically flag up and kick-out slacking students very early, before they can shame the institution.

your marks were just inflated. i was used to high 90s in high school too, but nobody gets them here. in every first year class they make the final 10% of every test a question far outside the scope of the course, knowing that maybe one or two kids will get it right out of the class of 1000.

Nah. Oldest wants to work for JPL relating to robotics and aerospace. Youngest has an interest in Medicine like biotech.
