Any former infantry types want to fill me in on the proper technique for "spray fire from the hip?"  I mean, I took lessons from quite a few current and ex-military types, and went about as far as a shoot-house instructor course, but I never learned about shooting a rifle from the hip as a CQB technique.

If you do a search in D&ST for the term 'fully automatic', you'll get hits from people such as Uzique, ghettoperson, and Turquoise all claiming that 'assault rifles' are fully automatic.

It's what they do in the movies, especially Vietnam movies.

i could post a bunch of stupid stats and facts from some random website and laugh at how stupid they are, but as far as I know no one here is touting that platform, so what's the point of posting it?

As far as I know, you're the only one mentioning the Violence Policy Center

This is probably what I had in mind when I made my comment:

Plenty of people 'round here are completely ignorant regarding weapons and think AR-15s are fully automatic

Because assault rifle is a technical term, and select-fire capability is part of the definition...well, if you take the US Army as a reasonable source!
"Assault Weapon" means whatever the text of the law restricting them says!  In 1994, it was a semi-auto rifle that could take detachable mags and had two or more "military type" features.  Now, in NY, it's one or more "military type" feature.  Then, you get the politicians in DC that tried to make most semi-automatics "machine guns" under DC law!

Ken, I mentioned the VPC's silliness as a demonstration of how uneducated people are on the subject.  They are supposed to be one of the leading advocates of the policy, yet they seem stuck on concepts learned from watching Commando.

re: VPC, I feel the same way about the NRA - supposed to represent the responsible gun owner, but seemingly represent the craziness and lobby on behalf of gun manufacturers.  Perhaps it's time they drop the 'Rifle' from their name.

I think the NRA president was spot on during his speech about a lot of things and the NRA has lobbied for a few fairly intelligent gun regulations.

Infantry are trained to bring a rifle up to the shoulder to fire, even in quick reaction 'spray fire' scenarios - at least in my admittedly limited experience. The pistol grip allows you to be able to move the rifle up to an aimed firing position faster without having to readjust your grip, its intended function has nothing to do with allowing it to be sprayed from the hip.

That being said it is easier to fire a rifle un-aimed or from the hip if it has a pistol grip and probably more accurate, (though if you're talking about spraying a general area so accuracy is kind of a moot point.) The pistol grip certainly does have a design function in helping a rifle being fired from multiple firing positions but I doubt going Tony Montana was in the design brief.

how about to protect yourself during a case of natural disasters or riots. During LA riots korean shop owners went on roof tops and started popping people who tried to vandalize their store.

good luck pistoling 60-100 odd people coming into your store.

and the purpose of the second amendment isn't primarily for hunting, self defence etc, it's about the purpose of an armed citizenry to prevent a tyranny, either foreign or domestic.

why can't pistols prevent tyranny? Why can't a semi-automatic pistol* put bullets in people invading a store? You're the worst self-appointed arbiter of all things American ever. Have you ever even been a tourist?

We should have the same standards for freedom as people in Africa? What kind of retarded argument are you making?

My argument had nothing to do with standards of freedom. I'm saying you gun people are petty and your gun culture is juvenile.
