i'm not scared of an AR-15, either. my point about the AR-15 was that they have kits sold for them that clearly make them look like toys to children. the 'is it still a sport?' thing is a bit of a trivial side-discussion (though i'm not generally in favour of killing animals in anything other than the most effective, instant way). a hunting rifle generally looks like a mean piece of kit. it's big, heavy, wooden, and smells of your dad's chewing tobacco. an AR-15 can quite literally be kitted out to look like a toy. or something from call of duty. it blurs the line between 'lethal weapon' and child's accessory, imo. a little uncomfortably, anyway.

personally, my value system, i wouldn't take a young kid hunting or give him a gun to shoot. but i respect other people may want to introduce their children to hunting (i have a little more trouble with the idea of someone wanting to get their kid into shooting/target shooting, but whatever). sure lots of rural people do it. i spent many an afternoon out in the woods trying to shoot small birds with a friend at age 14. and it wasn't just proper guns, either - air rifles and BB guns were also fascinating as a kid. but this is the thing: in the UK, getting a lethal weapon is extremely difficult, even in rural-farming areas. youthful fascination with guns isn't allowed to stray beyond toys/playing around. in america, the boundary between toy-guns and real guns is pre-tty scarily blurred.

I'm just failing to understand the point you are all making. Country kids have been given guns from a young age for centuries at this point. They're not the ones shooting people (except in this unfortunate accident), they're not shooting up schools, they just live a different life than you do. You're all being very intolerant of other peoples lifestyles. It's sad.

you're not seeing our point. nobody is saying "keep kids away from country traditions". i am asking why guns are marketed so aggressively at children. there's a big difference between a responsible father taking his son hunting as part of a bonding ritual, and a gun company designing gun parts/fascias that quite clearly are only going to interest kids.
As I said above, kids can't buy their own weapons. At the point that color scheme and size matter, the decision has already been made to buy the kid a weapon. It's all marketing from there. I think they're garish and stupid, but I'm not their market, shrug.
i am not doubting some parents' potential for grave stupidity. where we differ is that i would rather see the cynical marketing legislated against, rather than take the chance of letting it persuade some kid to get their dumbo parent to buy them a lethal weapon. it's obviously just a product designed specially by gun companies for a pretty questionable motive. no doubt it's a parent's decision at the end of the day, but parents are stupid, and they don't always know best.

How come no one has brought up the point that... nearly every other country out there that has heavy gun regulations has less crime-by-gun rate than USA?

I used the dataset below and punched in the major countries info and guess what...

The combined total of homicides (not just by guns) of China, Japan, Thailand, UK, Canada, Germany, Vietnam is STILL less than USA.  The common theme amongst these countries?  They have strict gun controls.

To be statistically safer in Vietnam than USA wow.  USA is really one of the shittiest countries to live in.  Thank god I live in Canada.

In b4 I get flamed for speaking dirty facts about United Shits of America.

The only countries that have higher rates of homicide via guns are mainly those African and Caribbean countries.  I'm not even gonna go into why lest I be labeled a racist.

And woah, guess who has the highest rates of homicide in America? People who are of African and Caribbean descent. Imagine that

Nyte, you could've easily explored the reasons for higher homicide rates in those countries so long as your reasoning wasn't "because the people are black".

Canada has a lot of black people.  I don't hear them shooting people on the news.

It's an American problem, not a "black people" problem.  Americans are fucked up gun-hicks.  Why don't they just admit it?

You're not inciting anger. You're triggering facepalms. I know D&ST isn't what it used to be, but you can at least try to be serious.

It's hard to be serious when there's only 1 or 2 people actually being serious and everyone else flaming each other.

Besides, I was serious up to the last sentence of that post.  I presented datasets and statistics, did analysis on it, and presented the outcome of it.

That's already better than EVERYONE ELSE here with their personal conjectures.  EVERYONE ELSE.

i don't think you need to 'present a dataset' or do much 'hard analysis' to know that america has more homicides/gun deaths than the rest of the sane world combined.

next you'll be compiling an excel spreadsheet sum totalling all of the prison populations of every single prison institution, to tell us at the end of your calculations that america has the highest prison population of the western world. just save the effort m8 and go right in for that "conjecture" (read: common sense / common knowledge).

If that's the case, then why is there a debate?

Just shut that 2nd amendment down and be like the other "sane" countries.  Or has gun ownership become so engrained in the insane American minds that we literally have to "pry it out of their cold dead hands".

America really IS fucked up.

How does one go about "shutting it down" without causing a civil war? The stereotypical gun nut is afraid that the black helicopters are going to come and take away their guns, leaving them defenseless from what they perceive as tyranny. You're not going to get them to turn in their weapons by calling them insane, either. There's been rhetoric for hundreds of years that "THEY will take your guns", and it's frightening how much some gun owners want to shoot another human being. There will be blood if you try a massive gun grab.

America really IS fucked up.
1. Removed 2nd amendment.
2. Grandfather clause all existing guns.  But no more sale of ammo of guns henceforth to the public.
3. Eventually, homicides slowly die down because dumb American criminals will run out of ammo.
4. Prison levels decrease thus bankrupting the prison corporations.
5. Gun manufacturer incomes decrease causing widespread economic stress.
6. USA goes through some sort of recession, possibly a mini-civil war.
7. Most of the dumb people (ie. hicks, gun owners, corp mercenaries working for pro-gun lobbyists/companies) are killed off by the USA military in the ensuing civil-war.
8. After the dust has settled, peace slowly comes back to USA.
9. USA crime levels drop way below levels prior to gun ownership.
10. The fucking End.

Oh no doubt in my mind there will be a civil war.  But people gotta die.  If they are too stupid to see long term, they don't deserve to be part of the long-term.

If I got a little ar15 when I was a kid I'd want to play like the big brave american heroes in those american movies. If I had a hunting bolt action rifle with a wooden stock I'd want to shoot animals. It'd be pretty boring to play with.

Whats wrong with target shooting? In most evolved democracies skill-at-arms has been a laudable ambition for centuries, the British NRA is one of the few sporting organisations to have a Royal charter, all target shooting clubs by default have charitable status, and I could drone on about the German and Swiss cultures too for a while, not forgetting Scandinavia.

The counter-argument is that letting kids play with toy guns and kill harmless animals with low-powered versions of real guns gives kids the idea that guns are toys to be played with and shooting and killing things is a hoot.
Better to introduce them to real guns, if at all, and all the safety and responsibility which goes with it.
