Cherish the reality check, you can always learn from someone who looks at the clouds from above and tells you where the sun shines.

Mother of god Microsoft Visio is terrible.

Apart from that job is still good. They're glad to have me and happy to let me do things at my own pace and according to my skill and judgment.

I did discover my indian colleague lied to me literally on day one - about having a piece of equipment I needed, which I later found him using.
Every time he tries to make me look stupid it rebounds on him, I couldn't care less.
Him lying made me go off and scrounge a much better piece of equipment which made my life 10x easier so another win there.
Also he set the fire alarm off, having nearly burned the place down before I started, causing a total evacuation and the fire service being called.
We could have been friends, too bad.

I've had to use Visio for process/root cause maps and found it far more adaptable than any of the other sort of templates for that.

I generally use PowerPoint for block diagrams and process flows, but Visio is much better suited for it. I like ppt because it's easier for me to manipulate the look and feel. I'm all about making my process flows visually appealing and sticking to the same format/color scheme.

in animal abuse,

Why are teachers like this? A lot of them are from biology classrooms. Why are biology teachers like this?

Mac, have you gotten a grant for a classroom pet?

e:
re from an aquaponics class project thread where the teacher's contribution looked like this:

Also, weird looking background, did the teacher take the picture at home?

I can't stand when schools issue this as a project; I worked at a LFS in an area with multiple elementary, middle, and high schools and around science-fair time you'd get HEAPS of kids and parents coming in to buy fish.

We tried to be relatively invested in the welfare of the animal when it came to selling fish and ensuring their required parameters were already established (i.e., we'd refuse to sell goldfish to owners of unfiltered bowls; ensure tank has been running for at least 2 weeks, "yes that 11 cent gold fish is going to need at least a ten gallon filtered tank now and at the minimum a 20 gallon later etc). I was one of the few workers who would stick to this policy and I'd get reamed by at least 10 different parents every science fair season. If I had a dollar for every time I heard "it's just a fish" I could probably retire.

Fuck science fair projects like this.

Some of my students are having allergy attacks. One kid is red eyed and in pain. I sent him to the nurse and they said there is nothing they could do. Can't give the kid a benadryl because schools aren't allowed to give medication. Hate that law. Doubly since it means I can't get one from the school nurse either. I once gave a kid a dollar for a single dose pack of Tylenol.

Nope. Can't even give kids a cough drop. It should be different for high school kids at least but it isn't. I gave kids cough drops before back before lockdown. Once we came back with facemasks and all, there were a lot less kids coughing all over the place. Face mask work. Too bad we can't encourage people to wear the mask during the fall.

They would have to provide the medicine themselves.

indigent brits with their 37.5 hour weeks.

they should work like the industrious east asians with their 60 hour, OECD-topping, suicidal workdrives.

didn't your man-sized clutch pillow idol, elon musk, only this week say in adoring terms that his lazy and entitled american workers, with their workplace welfare concerns and unionization drives, should be 'more like the chinese'?

'genius', amirite?

i have said before elsewhere, but his entire conception of labour 'value', like the nasty tory politicians, is self-justifying capitalist ruling class claptrap. yet you parrot it elsewhere and chime in with his 'high net-worth individuals are that way because they are supreme STEM geniuses getting their rightful reward'. it's the exact same fucking lickspittle ideology that justifies things like 'poor people should work harder'.

One really cool thing about Gen Z that I like is that they don't feel bad asking "why should I work?" I think millennials are the last generation to take to heart that being poor is moral defect. Young people are more likely to blame the economic system than themselves now.

Of course there is a bad side of that too but after a lifetime of seeing people punch down on the poor I am willing to try something else.

i don't think millennials really think that way. it started surely with the counter-cultural 50s hipsters/60s hippies and had a major expression in things like the gen X ironic/apathetic drop-out culture. think about the late '90s run of films which all seem to be set in a landscape of 'work sucks, offices suck': office space, the matrix, fight club, etc.

david graeber's writing on 'bullshit jobs' had immense cut-through with millennial readers. millennials have been very exposed to the shifting late-capitalist economy which has increasingly offered mundane jobs with zero actual value or purpose. the call centre or data-entry centre is very millennial.

There's forces pulling millennials in different directions. Disillusionment with work culture, and also with being unable to afford what previous generations had. Work ethic, where present, perpetually abused by employers. Reminds me of a lot of boomer parents, chewed up and spat out by the system and getting less than their parents for their trouble. (e: i can hear the furious typing and no, i'm not defending boomers)

But don't worry, the billionaires are having their own private space races. Who wants to be a trillionaire?

It feels like we're already living in corporate dystopia tbh, and it's only going to get worse since Congress thoroughly doesn't give a shit about the middle class anymore.
