yes, 18 year olds really make well-informed choices based on an intrinsic appeal of the discipline.

you're an idiot.

tripling tuition fees and emphasizing the need for 'return on investment' has obviously created a new ordering of university subjects.

this has nothing to do with 'consumer choice' and everything to do with the diktats of the 'market', as selectively interpreted by politicians who would wish to guide the national economy ("we need a bigger tech sector", etc).

as per usual, you have absolutely nothing of insight or originality to say on a topic. just recycling tabloid tropes. if i wanted to read a befuddled old crank letting out his bean farts on the daily mail comment section, i'd go there.

he’s saying the decline in the humanities is because students are ‘voting with their feet’.

enrolment in humanities courses in the UK has nose dived since they tripled the tuition fees. same as in the US since the financial crash.

or, to put it another way, as inequality has grown, social mobility has stalled, elite professions have pulled up the ladder, etc, humanities has become more and more isolated as a tiny minority concern for upper-middle class monied people.

dilbert reads these political policies, that is, tripling tuition fees and marketising education, as ‘students are voting with their feet’. like it’s a principled turn away from the humanities. like it’s inevitable that they’d decline because, of course!, they are ‘useless subjects’.

apparently demand has increased despite fee increase, although our fees are much cheaper compared to uk

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2 … -increases

First preferences for society and culture uni degrees up 25% in Queensland and 5.7% in NSW even after 113% fee hike
not to mention a lot of graduate corporate jobs for finance bros pay less than mcdonalds.

gee a 113% fee hike compared to a 28% for law and medicine, does this mean demand is too high dilbs?

oh zeeq, dilbs brains will explode when he finds out "english" as a degree is considered a national priority in aus and fees dropped heavily.

More Aus context - the education system struggles to deliver people competent at maths to university, so they tend to pick non-maths courses.

ah yes, everyone who takes a humanities subject does it simply because they’re not good enough at math. that’s exactly how human intelligence works.

what do you have to say about the science lecturer above complaining about having his pension axed by 30%?

“it’s the market, sorry son, your contributions just aren’t valued”.

“why should society and taxpayers pick up the tab so that science teachers can enjoy retirement?”

Anyway, twitter not really endearing myself by tossing up an unclosable popup if I try to scroll down. I used to just attribute those mostly to obnoxious, parasitic aggregators. But calling twitter parasitic probably isn't too far off the mark.

you have mentioned this like three times.

twitter is free. it costs nothing to sign up.

if you don't want to sign up, you can still see the fucking tweet. lmao. it's not like it's paywalled or behind a content block or anything. you just can't scroll endlessly through replies/related tweets.

this is not enough of an issue to warrant multiple complaints over. free-to-use social media platforms encourage you to sign up in shock horror bullying tactic!

A lot of people have mentioned a lot of things a lot of times on this forum, zeek. I hardly stand out in that regard. Twitter is "free," but so are STDs. I prefer websites when they're not trying to strongarm me into signing up, and I prefer to sign up for websites that don't employ those kinds of tactics. I probably wouldn't buy software that spams me with registration popups during its trial phase either.

Three times doesn't even come close to how often you've talked about Korea stuff, just to name one thing. You've also griped about me bringing up something more than once, at least that many times.

Sue me.

I want to imagine that they're just not very socially developed. Maybe they want to open up and say hi back, but freeze up and decide to play it distant.

I gather from discussion about this post is it wasn't meant to punch down on restaurant wages, but rather be disgruntled at college wages. STEM, too.

If someone posted that image already here, then I'll be the second one with no regerts. I'm not going to look hard. Stay tuned for post #4 about twitter popups and #n about various Microsoft UIs.

korea is a topic of discussion. complaining three times or responding to every linked tweet with an ‘omg twitter is so evil it tries to make you sign up!’ is autistic.

again, it takes 20 seconds to register for an account. email, password, done. don’t want to give an evul sOciAl mEdiA company an auto-generated, throwaway email address? er ok. then maybe just stop scrolling on the links?

like what can anyone say. if you don’t want their sign up dialogue box you can … literally read the tweets anyway. just don’t scroll. i honestly don’t know what to fucking tell you. continue being precious about twitter though. fight the power !

You've talked about me mentioning various things more than once, more than once. This mock annoyance every time, give it a rest. Here, I'll post it a fourth time:

I don't mind a popup asking me to sign in as much as I mind it completely freezing the page when I try to scroll (some posts are made in multiple parts!), and then backing me out of whatever I was reading when I click anywhere else. It's obnoxious.

I'll post about this again, just you wait.

apple literally has a feature that will fake an email address for you on any sign-up form.

you could sign up and even have your device auto-complete the form.

total time and effort: 10 seconds maybe.

or just keep complaining about it on an internet forum. that’ll show ‘em.

We've all done our part in humoring your quirks and some of your inconsequential snips and gripes here. It's time to give back.

Zero interest in "showing twitter." Closing the tab and posting a throwaway FWP about UI jank is perfectly acceptable/cathartic. I will post a thousand more times about it here before bothering with even a fake account just so I can read the rest of someone's tweet. Eat me.

If its so exciting post a screenshot.

Half the time people post twitter links its impossible to figure out which of 100 terse snippets they're really referring to.

"oooh ooh check out this savage twitter burn"
-> 20 pages of fuck knows what

The most twitter I get around to reading are screenshots of twitter. IMO, the second hand experience is better than spending time on the site itself. A bit like curated reddit.

you really are a piffling intelligence.
anyway.

the tories are introducing measures to deny university funding/offers to anyone who doesn’t pass with high levels of literacy as well as numeracy.

it’s all very well to talk about ‘people being encouraged to do english and humanities because there’s a dearth of good maths skills’. what about illiterate STEM types?

so under the new system it looks like you wouldn’t be admitted very far up the university system either, dilbert. imagine the wisdom of this system: requiring imperial students to be good at analysing shakespeare. genius.

of course, what this stuff amounts to really is just class warfare by other means. it always affects the disadvantaged, people from difficult backgrounds with disrupted early-life education, etc, the most. certainly nobody from a good fee-paying school is going to sweat over passing their basic english/maths requirements.

illiteracy is just as much of a problem as innumeracy. and making out that ‘the world of work’ and your average office job requires pre-university-level math skills any more than it requires literacy, communication or analytical skills is pure farce.
Dilbert_X

Erm, I did english lit and english lang at o level.

Innumeracy is a much bigger problem IMO, not much use being able to communicate if you have nothing useful to communicate.
