Having some mid level IT guy be his own boss at a medium or large company is a dysfunctional setup. Your jobs' dysfunctional IT departments need an overhaul. IT needs to be beholden to someone if they're causing issues, harassing other employees, breaching privacy when there is no reason to. Bring in a third-party audit if need be.

Planting porn on someone's computer is entirely unethical, along with several other things to call it including sexual harassment, blackmail, etc. It wouldn't have been tolerated at any of my workplaces.

A remote connection to check on stuff should only come after a courtesy call even if you sent out memos, or done after hours if the volume is too high. Just "taking over" whenever is a way to foster a paranoid work environment. Why did he need to check on Windows versions? That information should already be logged somewhere in company files. Something that should be part of the responsibility of the IT department with their lists of work orders, names, serial numbers, technician histories, etc. Rather fleet management, only computers.

Why does this upset you?
because they’re rude and grouchy at work. rather than correcting their social retardation, they turn it into a personality trait. it’s ingrown behaviour.

do you struggle to follow conversations on forums or what? we just mentioned our problems with IT/tech nerds about a page ago.

Some people never develop empathy or humility - isn't that the bigger tragedy?

LMAO These guys typically are the IT department.

I'm completely sure the IT guy in the UK was reading my emails - at a certain point completely unprompted he said "ah you know er Dilbert we ah um can't read your emails and um its completely impossible just er thought you should know" and I know exactly why he did it.

Haha, yeah. Plenty of ways IT could read your emails, depending on how stuff is set up. Very toxic work environment stuff you had going on. Maybe it's just the double whammy of having IT guys at engineering firms.

In defense of IT, sometimes it's their job to be the nag. "To exec: approve replacing this 20 year old unsecure piece of junk. It's not worth constantly dinking around with. No, I don't think spending $300 on an 18 year old part is a good investment. To office staff: please don't sticky note your password to your monitor. No you shouldn't save it on your phone unencrypted either, use a password manager: here's a list of recommended apps. No, don't text your password to me. No, that popup isn't flash asking to update. I know that's what it says, but don't click it. You texted your password to me last month, have you changed it yet? Then please change it, thanks." And into management stuff like "Please save dailies to this location, not your desktop, thanks." "Please don't overwrite an original document with changes. Save it as an updated filename."

It has its frustrations, but so do a lot of other jobs. Sometimes, like teachers such as macbeth, people like to let off steam. But planting porn on a rival's laptop isn't a healthy way of doing that. Griping on a more or less anonymous forum, way healthier.

It's disappointing (but not surprising) to hear that the three of you, mac/zeek/dilb have had Bad Experiences with IT guys. Hopefully that's not all you guys have ever had with them.

are you referring to yourself? you seem constitutionally unable to extend basic human empathy to refugees, migrants, minorities, oppressed groups, etc ra etc ra. it's not even like you try to place yourself in their shoes: nope, you blanket deny them compassion or understanding and accuse them of the worst sorts of bad faith.

some people also never develop self-awareness, i guess?

and i said IT guys are a special sort of annoying because they act annoyed and grouchy for being asked to do their own job. much the same as macbeth said: they act especially affronted and aggrieved over the sort of tasks that keep them in paid employment. honestly, keep up with the fucking conversation once in a while, you befogged old timer.

Sure it's annoying but heard plenty of stories of (insert job here) like that. Especially teachers and police.

Our machine operators nearly revolted when we asked them to actually do quality checks and not make stuff up cause that gives them less time to smoke and do nothing.

Reality is no-one really wants to do their job to the full.

In plenty of places I've worked no-one really expects it either, certainly unprofitable stuff like health and safety is completely ignored.

I haven't really had worse experiences with IT people than anyone else, they are singularly frustrating as typically there is no workaround to the IT guy putting up a roadblock or refusing to deliver.

I've had like 15 on and off years of it. Couldn't say what my average is, it's been too long and would probably be shot if I started again.

If you do, do yourself a favor and take a lesson or watch some youtube videos (record yourself with your phone so you can review your form). Do yourself another favor and buy yourself a pair of bowling shoes. They're not expensive, and it beats paying to put your feet in a pair of rental shoes. Buy your own ball only if you develop a lasting interest.

I was looking at bowling gear on Amazon and it all looks very affordable and accessible. I would want someone already into bowling to teach me. Picking the right weight bowling ball seems daunting.

Also, bowling shirts...do you own a bowling shirt?

I dunno, how big are you? Play around with some of the ones at the alley. I'd guess 12 pounds to start, move up if it feels too light. Heavier bowling balls make a great impact, but it doesn't help if you can't control it. Spare yourself the embarrassment of a late release, and then everyone looking over as your ball smashes into the lane.

Strike up some conversations, one of the alley workers or guests could give some pointers or recommend someone for lessons. Do any of your colleagues bowl? Admin staff?

I don't own a bowling shirt. I'm not on a team.

I will add that some custom bowling balls will roll kind of differently, forcing you to adjust your grip angle and where you release and your overall game. Depends on what all the shop does with the core. Mine is gripped with my palm towards the side of my body, and released to the side of lane center. No wrist crossover, and throwing arm doesn't swing over either. The ball will travel down that way and then curve towards the end, ideally into two front pins where you can manufacture reliable strikes. I dunno if they're still made that way or if trends have moved on. I don't watch bowling.

A ball's probably not something you're going to want made for you until you know your sweet spot for weight (and know that you enjoy bowling).

Kid emailed me at 8:58 PM asking about an assignment. I am emailing the kid back and fourth to help them this very moment.

This is what going above and beyond looks like. I demand a teacher of the year award.

And here you were complaining that none of the kids were invested. I'm sure they have stuff they'd rather be doing too than emailing sensei at 9 pm.
