Recent one I experienced- oops, we swapped the locations of rx and tx and now we have to redesign/retrofit, can you negotiate the costs down for us?

One day later

So how are the negotiations going? We need to start tomorrow, hurry up!

Just to get things straight, mac is of the mind that teachers get people calling them their favorites and saying they changed their lives, a warm and fuzzy job benefit he thinks isn't known to IT guys. Yet mac, a teacher who endlessly complains about his job and his "idiot students" on this forum, makes a post tearing down IT guys for *checks notes* complaining about their job and sometimes being a little cold.

Mac, there was plenty of gratitude on the IT scene on campus and in business, and still to this day doing some of the IT stuff for my current business. Helping someone through a problem over the phone or addressing it in-person until it is no longer a problem for them, generally results in much happiness and thanking. Maybe you don't drastically change the lives in IT, but there are many occasions where you pull someone's fat out of the fire, or finally resolve an issue that's been plaguing someone for quite awhile.

How many people did you rip off in your mechanic job? Did you scoff at people for not changing their own oil?

Did you ever make up with the comic book store?

I don't complain about my job directly to the kids or make other adults feel bad. It's a community. I am a community organizer.

Sounds familiar. When the cost overrun and delay gets found out "Well Ken failed to negotiate getting this done for free AND couldn't find a time machine to get it done before we asked for it, its Ken's fault"

So many Dilbert war stories. I've encountered arrogance everywhere, probably seems like its mostly electronics clowns because thats mostly who I've worked with. They don't even seem to like their fellow electronics engineers.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE TEST EQUIPMENT ISNT WORKING WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THIS PROJECT FOR EIGHTEEN MONTHS AND WE GAVE YOU THE INFORMATION TWO DAYS AGO AND NOW YOU'RE TELLING ME ITS STILL NOT READY YOU'RE DELAYING THIS PROJECT (also we gave you and the pcb manufacturer the wrong version files so you're both going to have to start again, pobody's nerfect!)

HOW IS THERE A THREE DAY DELAY IN THE MECHANICAL PARTS THIS SHOULD BE ON TIME AND RIGHT FIRST TIME HOW DID YOU EVEN GET A DEGREE ARE YOU INCOMPETENT (the firmware guy managed to overwrite his files with another project and never backed anything up so he's going to have to start from scratch, going to take four weeks minimum, oopsie!)

WHERE THE FUCK IS THE PRODUCTION JIGGING WE DIDN'T TELL YOU THIS PROJECT WAS HAPPENING OR INVITE YOU TO THE MEETINGS AND ITS NOT ON THE ROADMAP BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE FUCKING KNOWN AND PLANNED FOR IT AND DESIGNED AND ORDERED THE FUCKING TOOLING (just realised we specced a micro which went EOL two years ago so its back to the drawing board on this one, thats why pencils have erasers!)

This is sometimes true, but I find it less common than stereotype. I've seen it more from auto guys who work at lube & tunes. Less from auto guys who know a great deal about what they're doing. The same sort of applies at IT. Maybe the more you know about "The Deep Magic (TM)," the less you expect other people to know.

It's very hilarious to me that mac of all people is making a post about dickheads in a profession.

There's a Dunning-Kruger thing in there somewhere.

People who think they're expert in some trivial thing think everyone else is stupid.

The electronics donkeys I described have literally spent the last 10 years doing lighting control and little else.

Does anyone really start out hating IT people? I think it's something that's taken for granted, until you have a Bad Experience. Probably like with HR people. Not given much thought, until you have a Bad Experience.

People sometimes form this whole cynical opinion of a profession around one Bad Experience. All doctors want to do is get you out of their hair so they can go golf. The politicians are out to get you.

I had a very productive call with the Indian guy on Best Buy support. Got a replacement item for a problem-ship that never showed up. I wasn't an jerk about it. Got no runarounds. We both wished each other a fine rest-of-the-day.

People like nerdzique seem to have a hatred of nerds for some reason.

People don't like to be dependent on someone else, especially not some spotty nerd, just that makes people angry.

The IT guy at my company in the UK used to fuck with the C-Suite people just because he could "yeah-nya its going to take an overnight reset to fix that"
That sort of thing does annoy.

I had endless trouble with my workstation, freezing and crashing, which he made no effort to fix, a year after I left he decided he wanted it as his multimedia PC and helpfully let me know he'd found and fixed the hardware fault.

Did you guys have interdepartmental work orders for that sort of thing? None of the places I worked at specifically for IT dicked around with that sort of thing. On campus, a work order comes in: if we couldn't fix it on site, we'd fix it back at the help desk workbenches. Kept track of where hardware came from and what their serial numbers were too so we could refer to old work on new orders involving the same PC or printer or whatever. If someone sat on something long enough the department head would look in to see what was going on.

If your IT guy was ignoring work orders, and giving him a dressing down didn't do anything, he should have been replaced.

Everywhere I've been has had an IT helpdesk ticket system for tracking.

The IT guy mentioned didn't report to anyone so there was no-one to challenge him or dress him down, he could do whatever he wanted.

Same at my last job, the guy just refused to do things.

At Ford someone complained about the IT guy not doing his job - who then planted porn on the complainer's work PC.

editors don’t tend to type much of anything. you seem confused. unless you mean typing emails … in which case: welcome the every modern office-based job.

i don’t hate nerds. i am a nerd for my own interests, in a fashion. i just don’t like insecure and socially inept people who self-identity as ‘nerds’ and use it as a blanket cover for not working on their self-esteem or social skills.

The IT guy in my last job was just starting to cause trouble.

I came back to my desk to find he'd remoted in without permission. Mouse dancing around the screen and "Sanjeet has taken over your computer" triggered me to pull the plug, apparently he was checking windows versions.

I guess it was the same guy who tried to get every PC updated to Win10.
Yeah sure, 20 year old bespoke PCs specific to machines can just do that.
