It's not an official work function. It's a union get together for new hires. They are serving food since I had to fill out a food order form. I am going to the union president's home on the 12th to prepare for the get together on the 24th.

It's manufacturing in a small city in the middle of nowhere. 75% smoke. Just as many drink. Plenty use weed. Unsure how many do worse drugs that are still employed.

tl;dr workplace episode
Putting a 100% moratorium on participating in any workplace political discussion. I already didn't like getting sucked into it (and think it's a bad idea on principle), but was willing to talk when not otherwise occupied just for the occasional interesting conversation.
One of the execs had a violent tantrum over political stuff and started throwing crap around and knocking stuff over because the news told him that white men, especially middle-aged or older, are Bad People, although he couldn't provide any quotes or specifics. "THEY said it, and that's the way I feel!" translated that's what Fox or name-a-shock-jock said. Of course the CRT came into play, which was not defined but rather used as an ambiguous bludgeon.
It evolved into that from a completely unrelated point into raised voices and karate-chop finger pointing. When the not-conversation (overlapping voices, not a true exchange) was cut short (I dropped out because didn't feel like being subject to an increasingly embittered rant), that's when the crazy shit started going down. Stuff thrown around, knocked over, doors punched. The large mason jar on his desk was definitely filled with box wine, and not "cranberry juice."
The performance was stressful and embarrassing to the otherwise uninvolved audience. We are small, don't have an HR department, and neither I nor anyone else present was in a ranking position to tell him off. Tomorrow is going to be awkward. I have to interact with him on another project, and he's still storming about.
I'm not interested in drunken ramblings about the "lot of things Nazis got right," or the evils and unfairness of the "culture war" against white people, in any combination.
Fucking surreal.

I'm going to update my plans on new employment just in case things get worse. He's very emotive and a lot of it is just for dramatic show. But on the off-hand chance it deteriorates into something worse, I don't particularly want to become a statistic. Very juvenile behavior.
Not really sure where I'd go because I've heard some horrible stuff over the phone going on in offices I might have applied to. But there's some stuff that needs to be got together, especially in case I end up in a new field entirely.

You do things with hardware and stuff? Get a teacher license and become a carpentry teacher.
Getting a job in public education has been something I considered off and on since high school, although my experience as an unofficial sort of "student administrator" and seeing a lot of the inside nonsense sort of put me off. Maybe it was just that particular district's environment. Still, one of the regular what-if daydreams. I've been at this particular job for 15 years, and don't really fancy another 20 or whatever.
Part of me would be sad to see the tail end of the company though since I helped grow it since its infancy. I am also owed loan money that I may need to write off as a bad investment.
e: If I got into teaching, I'm not really sure what subject I'd like. Being a shop teacher sounds like a nightmare of making sure students don't chop their fingers off, and I think the course could be dropped if the high school is struggling.

There is no sand issue and stuff like paint and semiconductor shortages are purely the fault of environmental regulations or something. The gas prices are high because of wind power. "Forest fires? Clear brush!" Ignore study indicating that the fire spread faster through cleared brush than thick vegetation. Something-something tree-huggers.

Now that the Pfizer has been FDA approved, it's not good enough ("I'm not getting that shit in my arm," mRNA scary VERY NEW, experimental stuff! "Not enough time for studies," er, documentation is extensive, as to be expected from a huge rollout). Actually, the goal posts haven't moved back so much as they've switched to a different track. One of them is like "mmm, I think I'm going with the J&J." Moderna is on track to FDA approval. J&J hasn't even filed yet afaik.
One out of a hundred thousand doctors or w/e speaks out against the crowd of peers, and that's what's latched onto. Very tropish, "the scientist ignored by peers/government, but then the plot point happens, they were right after all, and all the experts look stupid." "Scientists said we couldn't fly before!" Oh, what year was that again?

I don't care so much when there's a reasonable give and take on something fluid like social matters and historical interpretation, but I'm not going to humor any more tantrums. But I have had it up to here with being the sounding board in that kind of mercurial working environment.

Small business like a small town, everyone knows each other. It's hard to avoid casual conversation without looking like you're giving someone the brush-off. After yesterday, it's like "who could blame me," but then again they very well could anyway.

Listened to a radio program today talking about how the governor of Hawaii is asking for people to reschedule their vacations because of COVID and the hospital situation. Business purposes only, please. Went over to recordings of interviews with people who were variations of "no way, we waited last year but not again, we have to go."
I get that that Hawaiian economy wants tourism, and don't know what the state plans to do to abate economic loss. I don't think anyone wants to go to Hawaii just to sit in a hotel for a few weeks under quarantine. Nightmare to enforce.
I can at least say I've tried to be open.

Just need to find the pendant controller for the robot I scrounged then I don't care, I found the $2000 controller box last week. My colleague thinks he knows where it is. I managed to intercept my idiot manager before he tossed another irreplaceable and essential piece of equipment in the e-waste bin, he didn't even thank me, just need to repeat the trick with the pendant.
No idea what I'll do with the thing if I get it working, but its become a quest and if Frodo can complete his then I'm getting this robot up and running.

You could also make cat toys on the side. I've had more success with making jury-rigged toys for my own cats (they really liked raffia) than most of the pre-made stuff. Maybe a robot to play with trophy cats for uninterested owners.
I did think of using a $10,000 3 axis robot to tow around a cat toy, robot cat toys with video-conference facilities do exist.
My other plan was to set it up so japanese weirdos could pay to control the robot over the internet to clear poop out of the litter trays.
Like some hybrid between arcade claw games and whatever poop fetishists do with their time.

Funny thing happened yesterday that is a good counter example to your screaming conservative office monster...I was cleaning up the event with the other union people. We were carrying the leftover boxes to another building. I had nothing to carry meanwhile one of the petite union girls was carrying a big box. I offered to carry it since "I am a guy". The other union girl told me to "watch your gender norms. Girls can carry boxes too"
