The Epstein files are getting released today and I have my own confession...one of my teacher friends is in the process of getting fired for hooking up with a kid. I had taken a group photo with him and a bunch of other (white) teachers at a bar during one of our Christmas parties. (I stopped going to the Christmas parties last year and haven't looked back.)

The photo was useful for dating apps because it was a nice group photo and showed that I had a pretty mainstream friend group. I never posted the photo on Facebook. I had the woman in the photo put it up and tag everyone.

The photo was one of my top ones on Facebook so I immediately went to delete it when I got the news. When I saw the picture it had not 1 but 2 guys who lost their jobs for being inappropriate with girl students. I immediately untagged myself from that photo.

https://media.newyorker.com/photos/5b4cba859316e42b3123fb1b/master/pass/Gessen-PB-PromoSocial2.jpg
From what I understand, when people get untagged the original poster gets a notification. I checked back later and not only did the lady delete the picture but also the older guy  who was tagged who got fired deleted his profile.

But otherwise I am sympathetic to people who take a photo with a person who happens to be evil later.

hooking up with a kid - fired? that should be a custodial sentence.

Guy I went to high school became a high school teacher with had a relationship with a 15yr old. Got 6 months in jail and had to register as a sex offender. Somehow his wife stayed with him and they had a baby.  Only divorced when he cheated and nearly overdosed on coke.

I am not sure if or when the charges will come and the thing "makes the news." I assume it happens more often than gets reported or anyone loses their jobs over.

Young male teachers often have to deal with, and I hate even writing it, attention from female students that shouldn't be encouraged. I assume the female teachers get the same from boys though they probably have to balance the male teachers too.

A lot of young teachers of both genders don't have the maturity to not take the bait. But this dude was in his mid 30s. He should have known better.

Oh well. Have to shot him now

impressive spree tbh.

i think diddling children whom are in your charge is probably a good sign that someone lacks a basic self-control mechanism.

should we be buying notebooks for poor kids, or is there a greater need for chastity belts for high school teachers?

The lady teachers are bad too. Tits out and high skirts. One Filipina used to wear cocktail dresses to teach math.

not terribly thrilled about the midnight call of needing to be in at 6am for some ill-defined reason. the wakeup call at 4am to be in asap can go jump in a lake, too.

in general, job stuff you're not allowed to pull on people in france.

i'm going home early.

if someone turns on morning sports radio, maybe even earlier.

already made it known how i feel about having my schedule jerked around.

Not really sure why I'm still working.
Actually I do know, it gets me out of the house and gives me a rest from house renovations.

Objective for the new year is to get access to the $30k 3D scanner and scan some of my stuff with it. Apparently it can output a parasolid directly which is a whole lot handier than an STL.

My work project is more or less finished, loose ends to tidy up which I can coast gently through, plus a few side projects to get done which should be a doddle.
The contract manufacturer is using my project and production line as an example of best practice within the company and to showcase to other customers. Its not that I'm clever or hard-working, but I am effective.

Another project is dead in the water - the company put the dumbest and smuggest people on it and they've radically fucked up. As far as I can see it failed at the concept level and should never have got past stage gate zero. But they've gone ahead and tooled it up and built a production line and it doesn't work.

If i'm asked to fix it I need to think about my answer:

A: Fuck off (I fixed another failed product and got a solid kick in the teeth for that)

B: If I fix it my bonus needs to be a fully restored M3 Scout car.

I have enough money, I do not have enough light armoured vehicles.
Also I'm tired of getting bullied by nonces in their Landcruisers, a 6 ton vehicle with a trenching roller on the front should make things even.

Also I'm currently banking my gross salary and living off my investments.

I think I should go wild and actually spend my disposable income. But how?

but seriously, if you spend any amount of leisure/relaxation time in front of a computer screen listening to music or pootering about on the internet, then investing a decent wedge of cash in a nice office chair/monitor/speakers/headphone/DAC/headphone amplifier/etc. will bring huge and immediate benefits.

Thinking of upping my game at work, and bored with the ipod.

I'm thinking turntable, isolating base, headphone amp.
I'd have to by some records obviously.

you could just start with a DAC/headphone amp/headphone combo. that would immediately boost enjoyment of even the stuff you already consume. so long as you have no physical objections to sitting there with a large pair of headphones on, of course.

physical media is its own wormhole, obviously. with vinyl and turntables being the most temperamental. most of the entry-level 'consoomer' turntables are aimed at tweens trying to collect taylor swift LPs. future landfill.

also purchasing speakers means having to be nice to your coinhabitants and possibly neighbours. as well as thinking about having a suitable room for them, and so on. very do-able though, even for desktop 'bookshelf'-style speakers. there's some amazing sounding gear out there thesedays. i've been particularlty impressed with all the latest DSP gubbins with room calibration. without any need for room treatments, using modeling alone these kits can EQ the speakers to the space they're in and provide really measurable improvements. which means everyone else in the house/building is happier, also.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed a "bell to bell" school cellphone ban into law Thursday -- in one of his last public acts before leaving office, and one that he considered a top priority.
oh no. no no no.

Sometimes it is better to park a kid on a cellphone than be the cellphone police.

again, i don't agree with removing smartphones from school at all. how else is a kid going to call their families to say their final goodbyes while the police cower outside in fear of an active shooter. imagine everyone's phone is in a teacher's drawer and in the chaos, everyone grabs the wrong phone and can't even unlock it.

pearl clutchers over a few disengaged students need to ground themselves with a reminder that students aren't allowed to use the restroom until given permission in our current rigid system. like, recall being 17 and told to wait for the bell? not great. "but some jobs also regulate bathroom breaks, so they," yeah, that's worse.

good place to once again also call for some measure of privacy in bathrooms and locker rooms over the voyeur's paradise that is america.

there is going to be a de facto sociological hard border drawn between well-adjusted children of conscientious upper-middle class parents (who ironically are probably way more online and glued to their phones for work emails 24/7) and the kids of everyone in the lower two-thirds of the population. a dividing line in levels and standards of socialisation that forms a cognitive gaza strip.

the PMC bourgeois types know that phones, ipads, tiktok, etc. are indefensible brainrot and take proactive steps to discipline or enforce boundaries for their kids. the rest, especially the lumpenproles, basically see the ipad or phone as a free babysitter. their progeny literally don't stand a chance. dopamine circuits fried by lurid AI-generated slop on youtube while still a toddler. practically irradiated. -45 critical hit to IQ.

within the next generation you are going to see a new 'elite' in educational and social-cultural contexts who distinguish themselves by being offline and literate. it's going to become a serious signaller of status, way beyond material wealth or online clout chasing. literally only the top 10% are going to have their own interior monologues and ability to introspect away from devices and AI. only the most privileged are going to be conversant with the history of cullture – even popular culture. the rest are going to be 'huh? who's that? have you heard of this live-streamer who is boxing the anime reviewer guy for shitcoins? poggers in the chat fam!'

you can't escape the slop even if you have the luxury of leaving your phone at home. it's literally everywhere, online and offline, poisoning media, discourse, even noncomputerized public spaces. i still take one look at something shared with me and go "that's ai" with reasonable certainty, but it's only going to get harder to pick it out. skepticism and critical thought is our only hope.

i don't imagine american children's multiple after school jobs will be very sympathetic towards them having to turn their work phone over to school staff. we need to decide what's more important: the smooth operation of the coal mines, or a bunch of liberal arts classes with glitter.

I think Uzique is mostly correct about the sociological divide. Parents who can afford to take their kids out of public schools and into private schools where cellphones bans are strongly enforced should do it. Public schools cannot enforce these bans due to laws that make it really hard to remove kids from schools. Private schools can just not enroll or kick out kids who make learning hard for everyone. (American federal special education requires both mainstreaming of disabled students and also protects them from discipline if mess up. There are mechanism which makes it easy for parents to sue districts if they feel their kid isn't getting the services they are "entitled to.")

...

I think the world is more likely to be won by people who understand how to leverage AI. ChatGPT is very helpful to college educated professionals. I am not just talking about copy editing emails but also processing and organizing data, planning and following through on projects etc. It is true that ChatGPT has talked people into killing themselves but it is also very good at so many other things. It has helped me plan and organize meeting, political maneuvering, etc. with great advice that isn't easily found.

Of course people can't become college educated people if their brains were already turned to mush by ipads as kids.

the problem – and yeah, the scenario that is very much going to play out at this point – is that this stuff is going to become so imbricated with everyday reality, as ubiquitous and at-hand as a google search was for web2.0, that the ~5% of the times when the LLM technology is disastrously wrong, nobody is going to bother to check or do their due dilligence. we are heading for a world where even the higher echelons of professional work – the "experts" – are beholden to a 'good enough' technology. that's Not Good. you don't want boeing engineers doing Good Enough. you don't want coders of apps or designers of websites doing Good Enough when handling your personal data, etc. but that's where we're headed for.

the old, manual, sweat-of-brow, elbow-grease forms of earning and maintaining expertise, passing on knowledge, training workers in the knowledge economy, etc. are going the way of the dodo.

this reminds me, i wrote a really pretentious essay when i was about 14 (lol) about how google was making everyone an armchair expert, and how that new state-of-affairs of universal punditry was obviously having negative knock-on effects to society/the way people socialise. chat-GPT is another turn of the screw of this dynamic.  it's going to make itself indispensable to so many aspects of life, but all the while make things subtly more shitty, more vague, and less certain; the approximation that lies behind its probabilistic reasoning is going to become the normative 'mode' of thought. we are substituting thinking for well-ordered tokens of thinking. NOT GOOD!

chatgpt
i do think that chatgpt has more coherent search results in less time than your usual google-fu through a mountain of irrelevant sites. turns out ai can be really good at pulling information you actually want. just gotta watch out for the confidently wrong stuff. it's a crutch made of popsicle sticks.

"hey, that link you gave me doesn't take me to a real website."
"oh, my bad. you are absolutely right to point that out. this isn't a real link at all. if you would like me to provide a real link, just let me know. i'm here for it!"

it's even more insidious because newgpt puts on a show of being More Erudite and less goofy. everyone who uses it should have a nice long conversation with it about a subject they know well and pick out all the egregious errors it makes.

Parents who can afford to take their kids out of public schools and into private schools where cellphones bans are strongly enforced should do it.
imo private schools should be nationalized, and public education utterly divorced from the whims of the executive branch.

this current state of affairs where we have poor schools, rich schools, richer private schools, and creepy church schools needs to end. once all the kids are in the same boats, maybe holes will start getting patched.

Private schools get nationalized when communism comes to America. Otherwise I think it is more likely public education is shrunk to save the government money. The government will create "alternative educational model" like micro schools, homeschooling, remote schools, AI schools. Think something like: If you own a home in the district your kids go you have an option of taking a property tax waiver if you enroll your kids in one of the approved ed models.

I think Generation Alpha will be the generation that experiences a shift away from the broad inclusive campus style education with a soccer field, lockers, after school clubs, cafeterias etc. Maybe even just delete high school. Give 14 year olds working papers.
