i'm editing a 550 page book on rocket propellants, high-energy explosives, and ballistics. you'd probably like it.

just did a chapter today on future directions of small-calibre gun propellants w/r/t eco-friendly disposal, removal of lead and copper, etc.

can you believe i get paid basically $50 an hour to read this stuff and argue with nitwits like you? i work 2-3 hours a day and then go and eat excellent food and spend time in the company of exotic women.

That would be interesting.

I've estimated there's about 5-10 tonnes of lead in the bullet trap at my range, we do need to clear it out.

I may have to start manufacturing primers as there's a global shortage.

At least you don't have to do teacher observations. Three times a year I have people sit in and watch me teach.

i'll copy you some stuff i've checked today. i'll put it in spoiler tags and probably delete it later because i don't want to get into hot water for intellectual property reasons.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
After the HK416 (Heckler & Koch, Germany) had been introduced for the Norwegian army in
2006, soldiers became ill with flu-like symptoms after training. Repeated exposure to high
concentrations of emitted fumes, consisting of particles and gases, gave acute respiratory
symptoms. It was found that the newly-introduced steel core ammunition, NM229, had
generated more copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) than the lead core ammunition, SS109, that it had
replaced [119, 120].

Lead has also been much used in small arms
ammunition projectiles, which have typically consisted of a copper outer shell with a
lead/antimony core material. Around 100 000 tonnes of lead is dispersed into the EU
environment from sports shooting, hunting and fishing activities each year
(https://echa.europa.eu/hot-topics/lead- … ng-weights).
People, especially hunters and sports shooters are exposed to lead mainly through inhalation
and ingestion. Exposure to lead has resulted in various illnesses, such as CVD (cardiovascular
disease) and peripheral arterial disease [126]. Ninety-nine percent of fired lead shot ends up in
the environment (99%) [127]. Lead is dissolved by the ground water and is absorbed into the
flora and contaminates the surface water [128]. Dire consequences have been observed for
wildlife, such as earthworms [129] and scavenging or predatory animals, such as bald eagles
[130-133].

that hasn't been copy-edited by me because i'm copying it verbatim from the authors' submitted manuscript PDF.

isn't one of the agents used in primers shared in amphetamine production? i read there's a global shortage of ADHD medication now because of the war in ukraine and huge draws, presumably on primers for ammo and things like fuel for hellfire missiles.

The army has a new rifle that comes with a suppressor by default. You don't even need thousands of points to unlock it.

From what I was told rifle suppressor tends
to send gas straight back to the shooter's face. I wonder if that will become a problem.

apparently so, but from what i've read lately (and i'm now obviously an expert), it sounds like america is way ahead of the rest of the world with munitions and safe disposal.

still, funny to see that dilbert criticises everyone for their lifestyles and yet is pumping lead into the environment just so he can hit paper targets at the range. 100,000 tonnes a year in europe from hunters and sports shooters alone. can't these people just get a VR headset and get off from murdering things that way?

lead is sooo 200 AD. i'm more interested in activities and pursuits that turn frogs gay and put microplastics into mother's mammaries.

Lead shot and lead bullets are two different things, most lead bullets are collected up.

thanks to this discussion i just sent the author a fact-checking query because i'm quite sure that 100,000 tonnes is way too much even for europe's hunters/fishers/nerdlings.

Rural folks with gun ranges in their backyard are turning their homes into EPA cleanup sites. I am sure they will blame the gays in NYC when their grandchildren get lead poisoning because they rolled around in the open fire pit in their backyard.

And please don't misunderstood me...I support them in this endeavor 100%.

Shooting guns is a pain. Even with double ear protection it's loud, and I sometimes have to shoot in the company of people using bone-rattling calibers on other lanes. Smells horrible even in the most ventilated indoor ranges, and outdoors.

Archery is chill. I used to go to a place that had targets arrayed along a trail (obviously laid out so you aren't shooting at other parts of the trail). Different crowd in my experience.

Imagine being a grandmaster engineer in charge of an ammo that ends up making its shooters sick. Whoops.

I would have to do some research but it sounds like a big number, OTOH every time some moron takes a pot-shot at a pigeon with a 12 bore thats an ounce of lead launched into the environment, and the spanish etc blast anything which flies over. But I thought Europe mandated non-lead shot now?

Seems like 100,000 tonnes is not so far off, but I would guess a lot of the 'sport shooting' number is eventually recovered, or will be.
https://echa.europa.eu/hot-topics/lead- … ng-weights

Not forgetting military danger area ranges where the bullets get spread over miles and miles, not collected in a backstop.

There is nothing good about lead in the environment, but the impact is actually limited, in most places it forms an oxide layer and takes 1,000s of years to dissolve. Unless its actually eaten by an animal where hydrochloric acid disssolves it or is in a wetland quickly its not really a big deal, there is always lead in the environment at some level.

The simple answer is to mandate non-lead projectiles where the projectile won't be recovered.

Is this the same america which used agent orange and has dumped umpteen tonnes of DU across the ME quite recently?

Most ranges here are well spaced out, outdoors, limited to non-magnum non-jacketed ammunition, and except for actual rifle ranges pistol cartridges only.
ISSF and WA1500 matches mandate non-magnum, non-jacketed ammunition, so there's no reason for anyone to use it.

If anyone makes too much noise they're told to stop, often by me.

apparently so. but the replacement materials aren't uncomplicated, either. apparently a lot of the copper-based is less effective and has worst outcomes for the animals or eventual targets.

well, duh, but i was referring to the maintenance, testing, and disposal of their own stock. their facilities are predictably leagues ahead of most other nations.

funnily enough i'm not editing a book that's cataloguing america's war crimes.

You would probably need a multi-volume release for comprehensive coverage of American atrocities, that we know about.

I'm sure clay-shooting, esp sporting clays, dumps several orders of magnitude more lead into the environment than game hunting, but over a more limited area (some ranges are now full collection ranges I think).
Clays are relatively easy to convert to steel shot, simply adjust the speeds, distances, target sizes.

For game you can compensate by using larger shot and higher velocity to get the same impact at a given distance with a lighter metal, but to achieve the same pattern you need more of it so the total mass and energy is higher, where steel is mandatory 12 bore 3" magnum is now min spec, where lower powered cartridges could have been used in the past.

A friend of mine did write the book on shotshells, apparently people are mightily pissed that their low power game shotguns are now obsolete.
His next step may be to look at steel shot.

A student who was removed from my roster showed up after being suspended for fighting. She was not supposed to be in my class.

She has an emotional behavioral disorder. I had to try to deal with that at the start of my observation. I am apoplectic.

One of the heifers at work seems to have taken a shine to me.

Now I can't go to any social functions.

Not that I really planned to, but its nice to have the option.

I highly suggest you create uncomfortable work environments by romancing your coworkers. There's nothing like having to sit next to a substitute teacher you [redacted]. There's nothing your boss making you give a presentation to a room with half dozen women you either hooked up with, led along or got led along by. Happy you will be when you have to sit in a professional development group meeting with them too. It is a lot of fun having to sit and watch them give a presentation.

The boss who hired me left about a month ago. She called me last night to try to recruit me to her new company. Having been under the thumb of private equity for the last year after working for a public company for over 10 years prior, I can say with some perspective that I don't at all enjoy working for private equity haha.

The company she now works for is a fortune 500 (maybe 100?) company with what she says is a way better culture. Definitely more of a long term vision than trying to squeeze every last drop of profit out. I don't particularly enjoy moving roles so often, but I think I'd be stupid not to check it out.

No but I'd be forfeiting a significant amount of money in the form of a retention bonus, so they'd either have to give me a signing bonus or a significant raise beyond the standard bump I'd ask for.
