I want to see Jay win one of these arguments one day. Really I do. We all need to start a book list for him that starts with the basics. I propose 'Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of Your Professional and Personal Life' by Richard Paul and Linda Elder. I haven't read it, but the title is promising.
i have read it. i don't think jay would benefit from it, because just like warmong, he believes, no, he is convinced he is right in everything he says.

Critical Thinking advocates that you must assess yourself, and those two will never get past step 1.
I assess myself constantly, thanks. It's part of what makes us all better human beings. Why I haven't reassessed my penchant for arguing with idiots on the internet I haven't the foggiest though. It's not like any of you ever change your views no matter how much evidence is piled up in front of you.

Most southerners switched sides because they believed the Republicans offered better economic ideas
Most southerners are dirt shit poor. Much poorer than the northerners who for some reason don't think the republicans offer better economic ideas.

Yeah but that can be explained by level of education.

Says the guy without a college degree. You're too much man.

It's because they have pride. I asked my roommate one time why he was such a bonafide Republican when he grew up dirt poor outside of Charlotte, NC. I was about 20 years old at the time, grew up in ultra liberal New York and just couldn't understand the idea of what he stood for. He patiently explained to me that he didn't feel that he had a right to take money from others, that they had earned their money. He wasn't jealous of rich people, he just accepted that they existed and hoped to one day join their ranks if he worked hard enough for it. Not everyone in this world wants to fuck over other people just because they can via a vote.

I used to ask myself why Christians weren't aligned with Socialists politically. It made perfect sense, aside from Marx screwing the pooch by preaching atheism, Christians believe in 'love thy neighbor' and charity and a whole bunch of things that seemed to line up perfectly with the belief system. There's one problem, Socialism is based on jealousy and that's a big no-no. You're supposed to be accepting of your lot in life, improve it if you can, and if it doesn't work out you'll be rewarded with a trip to heaven at the end. Christians believe in charity, and the grudging acceptance of it when it's needed, but you liberals are just about the most off-putting people possible to them.

As for the racism, that's mostly confined to the cities. Atlanta, Memphis, Birmingham, New Orleans, etc you'll run into racism from both sides. Out in the country where the real poor people are? They don't give a crap about skin color. They're just trying to get by. They'll sit down with their barbeque and grits and get along better than most people in cities do.

Lastly, Southern people are some the nicest, warmest, most hospitable people on the planet. I didn't really appreciate it when I lived down there, but there's something to be said for living in a slower paced world where everyone smiles and waves at each other compared to the city I live in where if you make eye contact it's seen as a threat. So, I'm sorry if you don't agree with the way they vote, but that has more to do with having no exposure and no realistic portrayal of their lifestyle being presented to you. Most of them may be poor, and what they do for fun you might find more amusing than enticing, but they're happy for the most part so they must being doing something right. I have yet to meet a happy liberal.

That's not an exclusive trait to people in southern US, that's a trait of people who live in tight knit communities (ie. country/small towns) vs. dense population centres where everything is impersonal (ie. big cities). I've noticed this every time I've been in the country both here and when I was travelling in the US last year (driving through LA compared to the road from Reno to Yosemite as one example).

I've seen most of the country and trust me, they take it to a whole different level. There's a reason people talk about 'southern hospitality'.

Shrug, I lived down south for four years and have lived up here for 27. The difference is night and day.

I'm licensed in New York State and my friends and family are all here. We want to buy a vacation home near Charleston as soon as we can though.

Oh, and I'm a weird fuck that actually enjoys snow.

i'm going to the animal shelter in November and adopting a mongrel. i will feed it, keep it warm and take it for walks. i will name it "Mutt Rmoney" and will kick the fucker if there are tax breaks for the rich and i lose my mortgage deduction.

if obama wins the election i will donate to the shelter i picked him up from, let him breed the AKC bitches in the neighborhood, and share all the government funding i get with the dog.

fuck that, i guess i am a republican. the dog did something wrong or he wouldn't be in jail, the government can't make me get a dog and if ever do get a dog that lazy fuck can pull his own weight - he can damn well feed himself, clean up his own shit and i will expect his share of the house payment promptly.
