It's up to him.  Work his ass off for the next generation.  Be the first role-model for the next generation.  He makes the sacrifices so he can see the fruits of his labor, his highly successful grandchildren.  If he isn't willing to make that sacrifice, well, screw him.

No.  It's up to him if he wants to be fucked.

Like I said, sacrifice.  I've said this example before.  Vietnamese refugess with nothing but the clothes on their back.  Coming here via small boat, raped, robbed by pirates.  Most of your relatives missing or dead.  You arrive here alone.  You make do.  Find someone, fall in love, get married, have kids.  Sacrifice.  Value education.  Send all kids to high school.  Send some to college.  Some manage to become doctors.

So, what do you not understand about the above?

It's a cultural issue, not a monetary issue. End of story.

True.  But I can only relate what I know.
My friend who's a first gen immigrant with parents from Nigeria does pretty well now lol. Her dad busted his ass to go to get an education and a high paying job. Now he's a regional manager at Corning in Taiwan (guys who make all the glass for phones), her brother is at MIT doing engineer, sister doing her residency for med, other brother doing college admin now she works for the NY State senate as an intern

By what standard? Comparing the bottom to the top? Whatever. It's not all that hard for someone born at the bottom to reach the middle. It just takes motivation and making the right friends. I'm not even talking about connected friends, but just people that aren't going to drag you down with them. It's almost better to be a loner if you're poor

I could drag up the scholarly articles on this but I have a feeling no one is going to bother reading them. In short: the class you are born in will most likely be the one you die in.

Almost fairly the same between USA and Denmark. Beth you have to realize most Euros (huge generalization) believe that fairness is what people make in wages. America (culturally), believes fairness in equal opportunity for success. No shit people at the bottom of the barrel have a harder time rising up. It's up to THEM (as Ilcono said), to bust their ass to bring a better life to future generations.

And I'm saying life is more complicated than "work hard and you will move up". My point was that the one, single solitary, place that everyone is given a FAIR and EQUAL shot at life should be college and that our government should take steps to make this a reality.

But it is a reality. You just refuse to acknowledge it.

College isn't for everyone, and the government shouldn't make it so.  There are damn well so many other ways to move up in the world.

I never said anything about making it "for everyone". As I said in the OP, one of the good things about our system is that it prevents academic inflation. My complaint is that not everyone who can go there and can do really well and can make excellent students and citizens and blah blah blah get to go because economic factors that you, jay, and cybargs are totally sure do not exist.

LOL at community college being free.  Why should students be separated at the community college level?  What happens to people who think they know what they want and enroll into a 4 year school only to realize they have no idea?  You're either not college age yet or ignorant to the fact a large chunk of college students change their majors after they are enrolled.
pfff, everything is relative, of course it doesn't cost $0, it costs much much less than others.

that's the entire point, haha, I've seen a lot of college students drop out of state schools simply BECAUSE they had a change of heart when it comes to majors, and re-enroll in community college. I'd think that they're still figuring things out and should be separated from those who are more serious about using community college to gain a technical education.
Umm... what? You don't understand that colleges offer different fields of study? You aren't likely to see deadbeats in a nursing program or enrolled in calculus or something, they're usually in women's studies, psychology or a low level english class. Community colleges still have pre-req's for courses.
yeah but there still seems to be a significant amount of overlap, based on my experiences taking courses at my local community college when I was in high school.

It might have been different at your local schools, I don't know.

I don't want colleges to get bigger or for more people to go. I don't want the U.K.'s inflated system. I want college to mean something and for our government to make it mean something by making sure the right people can and do go.

Most people wasted time and treated it like thirteenth grade. So what? Ignore the bums and make friends with those that care.

Based on what? An economic quota system? Please.

Well, wouldn't it be better to simply separate it into "technical school" and a more broader, but lower level college for people that need to figure their life out?

Again, this is where a european system is slightly better, where the option to attend a technical school and graduate is present at a much earlier time, at 16 rather than 18.

I'd rather see someone make it to college based on grades than who their daddy was or how much money they have.

The government can pay for the tuition with interest free loans that are paid once the degree is earned and the person starts earning a decent wage.

Err no. A start would be making those pell grants, the ones you used to go to school you massive hypocrite, match actual college cost instead of just a fraction of a "cheap" state college cost.

Ahh, so you really are passing off the company line as your own. Tool. Yes, increase subsidies more so colleges can raise tuition more. Daddy dean needs a new lamborghini.

Maybe, but at least I wasn't completely retarded. Is your degree in pool management?
