you don't do creative writing tasks in english degrees at college. you do a creative writing degree for that. i've never had to produce any tortured amateur poetry for my course, thank fuck. also galt i think you're very wrong in saying poetry is uncreative and restrictive because it needs a metre. the beauty of poetry is in condensing down a huge majestic thought into a fine wrought phrase, with an aesthetic cadence that suits your point. the art of rhyme too is fairly universal: from nursery rhymes to the most eloquent lines of pope. it's an art. the rules don't diminish it, it shapes and heightens it. plus there's tons of free verse with no rules if that's your thing. go nuts.
