Not sure if you guys had it in the UK, but when I was growing up, I watched Shining Time Station all the time. This was where they had the Thomas the Tank Engine bits as part of the show, and the Thomas bits were introduced by Mr. Conductor (played by Ringo Starr and then George Carlin).

Loved that show to death.

after an intensive 3 second google, it looks like shining time station was the american version of THE MIGHTY THOMAS. looks like it did quite well too. ringo starr was the conductor on our version too

Sigh, television was so much more clever and fun back then. I can't find the same caliber of children's shows today.
