Or you could be like me, and try to find music that may not be the newest, but would be new to me.

For example, I just recently discovered fun. and Gold Old War. Their albums aren't new by any chance, but it helps keep things fresh.
I do do that. I go back and look for bands that I haven't experienced before, or that I overlooked, but my boundaries are still in place. I'd much rather go explore a new-to-me punk band from the late 70s than listen to stuff put out today. Pandora actually helps me find new old stuff fairly regularly which is nice.

Oh, and it doesn't help that my fiancee has a completely different musical taste than I do. She's Bonnaroo to my Bamboozle/Ozzfest so shows together are kind of out of the question.

Oh alright. I'm kind of the same way. There are a few people that I'll always follow from band to band, but not many.

Well, I have a recommendation for you. May or may not be up your alley.

Have you ever checked out the RX Bandits? They originally started out doing ska-punk, but now they're more rockish-somethingorother. Don't know how to describe it, they are extremely technical and all very talented. Most of the music is pretty fast, so it might appeal to you. When I want to listen to something a little on the complicated and technical side, I put them on.

well seeing as i'm going to intern and very possibly get a job/career with the world's foremost high-/avant-garde music magazine... probably not. music isn't just some passing teenage phase for me, i'm really interested in it, so whereas you just get sentimentally cemented to the bands that soundtracked your 'best years', i'm still engaging with music for music's sake.

no they're not. nine inch nails, deftones, nirvana etc. are completely standard fare for teenagers. it's kerrang! music. i think all those bands are great and i'm not putting them down at all, but to say that they're out of the cultural reach of a 15 year old is dumb. all those bands got popular in the first place by selling records to angsty teens.

I'm not saying that they're out of reach, thing is I see more 15 year olds listening to the pop music of today (Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, etc.) Sure there is still a considerable amount of 15 y/os who listen to Nirvana, etc, but I wouldn't say they are the majority? At least in my area.

A lot of the music I liked as a teenager I got into before it became popular. I was actually one of those insufferables that chased the Next Big Thing and discarded it when it actually became big. I was into the Deftones from Adrenaline until White Pony made them popular, I was into Korn until they hit MTV, and the same for Limp Bizkit. I liked Staind when they were still pushing their Mudshovel demo tapes. I was that guy. That's why your internet persona amuses me so much

So someone stole my backpack a few days ago. Full of notes and such, with the only truly valuable things inside being 1) a spare key of mine, 2) nice Ray Bans.

I found my shit halfway transferred over into a bigger bag behind some nearby apartments, with my sunglasses taken out of their case and simply laying on the ground. I guess polarized Ray Bans don't have any street value? (not even a crack rock? c'mon...)

My backpack itself is still gone, as is the key. I already replaced the lock the key went to, so I essentially had my car broken into for just a Jansport backpack.

Really hit the jackpot there, asshole.

I must warn you, they have a noticeable ska influence, so if you don't like horns, this may be difficult for you to listen to. On a different note, their drummer is insane. I think they did their "...And the battle begun" album all live in the studio.

cause i'm nothing like it at all? dude everything i listen to is on record, on my last.fm. you can see exactly what i listen to. i don't need to lie and evade-- in fact i can't. how am i the sort of guy that is always into the "Next Big Thing"? my music tastes have been pretty much consistent since i was about 14 years old: electronic, experimental, ambient. nothing has changed. keep trying though.
