In two years when he turns 16, I'll hand it to him. But his grandpa promised him a BMW.Macbeth wrote:

Two of his classmates are likely to get their dad's Porsche's. Yeah, peer pressure. /fwp.
i was always envious of the kids in my HS who got cars for their birthdays. nice ones too, not some shitty $3K civic.
That's what I don't get. You bring a child into the world, invest time and money to give him the best upbringing you can give, and then you give a beater as his first car? WTF? Risk the chance of a breakdown or worse at some unknown place?Hurricane2k9 wrote:

The logic being first time drivers are the highest risk and are most likely to write it off...Ilocano wrote:

Or waste a shit load of money on a car they are likely to smash anyway
i wrote off my first car in the first month i had it, im glad it wasnt expensive...
YMMV I guess. In my case, I got a new car at 15 1/2, and not a single scratch or dent of my doing for the life of it.
Mines broken down a few times. But i'm hardly surprised.RTHKI wrote:
idk anyone who had a beater car who broke down in hs
But seriously, a brand new CAR for your birthday? Come into reality with the rest of the world.
I got a 2001 Civic as my first car and I'm still driving it.
Well I got mine as a hand-me down when I moved out because I needed one. But it was worth about £200

I'm looking for a new car right now for me. By the time I hand it to my son at age 16, it'll be two years old.

eh, getting slammed by an 18-wheeler at 55MPH is gonna smart whether you're in a Civic or a BMW 330i.Ilocano wrote:

Loved it, drove it for 5 years, crashed twice lol.
Nah, I'm talking about taking a trip to the mountains for some snow activities, driving cliffside, and something screws up.Hurricane2k9 wrote:

True, but that could happen in any car. Maybe a beater wouldn't be good but I don't think I would (or could!) buy my kid anything over 10 grand. If I was that concerned about his car breaking down in Bumfuck Nowhere I'd give him a satellite phone
I had to Google thatPrivateVendetta wrote:

Looks like my knees would be touching my chest if I tried to drive one of those.
That's what insurance is for. I'll already be paying an arm and a leg for that, so not an issue as long as it's not his fault. But if it is his fault, equation changes.Hurricane2k9 wrote:
