Don't show the cat videos of other cats though, or let them hear, this can create a lot of trouble.

my disagreement with dilbert on them is you don't have to let them into the wild, and it's better that you don't. a tough life even in cat-loving countries with an abundance of neighborhood cats as social norm. rampant disease, injury, sometimes the animal just disappears and never shows up again.
The one cat was a bit of a special case, he'd lived wild for a year or two, we were on a three acre property on a private road surrounded by other three acre properties. Mostly he didn't go too far.

So once again, the cat might seem manic when they push through the door in the morning, but chances are they were sleeping soundly 5 mins before, its not a sign they had separation anxiety all night.

The point I'm making is assuming you go through with this you're going to be faced with your partner opening the door, seeing the sad little face, listening to the yowling and recriminations.
You'll have to stick it out for a few weeks, and prove that its mostly an act built on indignation, not actual suffering. They're almost certainly fast asleep and perfectly happy all night.

i think at least one of the cats in your videos above actually teleported to the bowl.

oh agreed. lots of stuff can be choke or entanglement hazard. the right kind of cat personality could play themselves into a panting mess going after a toy on an elastic string attached to the ceiling, but yeah maybe take it down when they're through.

more valid points made in above various. the cats being attracted to people who "dislike" them i guess is partly the body language thing. periods of avoidance and not constantly staring at them or seeking them out being a more inviting and chill vibe, i suppose. especially party guests. from observation, a guy sitting on the floor watching the game peacefully will probably be approached more quickly than the dog person making loud noises and slapping their legs trying to call it over.

your place sounds amazing, actually.

and the cat sometimes indicates it wants to explore outside (a lot of floor to ceiling windows, the cat is always peering outside, watching bugs or taking an interest in the street scene outside). we let it out for 10-15 minutes at a time, but it's nervous and apprehensive the whole time. it is most definitively an Indoor Cat.
cats like this would probably really appreciate high places with little cubby holes, indoors or out on a catio. getting it used to being out in such an enclosure and spending more time like that for long naps or watching could help with conditions indoors.

not to take over your cat experience, anyway.

the other half has a harness too and the idea was to walk the cat (we live next to a large park - quite a rarity and bonus in inner tokyo). but the cat is a very long way away from being comfortable in the wide open. the balconies for now are about as far as it will go.

overall it just seems like quite an attachment-heavy, tremulous, nervous little thing.
still rarely see cats on harnesses in this town. it's a wonder they're sold in brick & mortar establishments here at all (the harnesses).

if i might venture to comment further, two cats is probably the right number of cats to keep them busy and out of your hair. that's probably not what you want to hear right now though, lol.

we also have a window seat, like one fastened to our large front bay windows with suction cups. the cat sits in that for a couple hours a day.
the videos of those things falling off the windows with the cat still on are unintentionally hilarious. ahem, animal suffering is bad. (the cats are fine, their dignity is not)
