Hey man, maybe I'm the best friend they have. I'm out there not enabling the system that has them choosing favorites among the customers for an extra buck fitty on top of my order of tacos.

I'm on the fence about the system. From the restaurants perspective it's great. From the workers perspective it depends. Working a lunch shift is trash. Working a Friday or Saturday night you're making way more than you would if you were non-tipped. You work your ass off for the money though.

I have never in my life mistook an Arab for a Latino or vice versa. I know the look you referred to Mac, of some ppl from the Greater Antilles, but to me that doesn’t look Arab. It looks like a mix of Taino/Carib, West African, Spanish. The same for Desi ppl. Unmistakable looks. In the case of GunSlinger, that’s a whole other situation.

Y’all didn’t grow up in a multi cultural scene n it shows.
I only brought up the fact that I get mistaken for Arab as an example of Hispanic people sometimes getting misidentified. I KNOW ARABS ARE NOT INDIAN.
There was a Sicilian kid in high school who most probably had some North African blood in him. He hated when people asked if he was Arab.

I think that's kind of it--the whole system is almost essential to keep restaurants floating along. They need to be able to adjust salary costs with customer flow, which is where tipping comes in. There's a balance to it, but 2 or 3 bucks an hour isn't it. Up here it's like $7/h and we're well off being required to tip 20%.

a lot of the more hipster restaurants here are eschewing tipping and charging a flat 18%, explaining it pays for the benefits of the kitchen employees. I think doing this, along with paying servers a living wage, is a better solution.

I think a flat 18% is probably better for everyone than higher base wages. It's basically profit sharing. Restaurant does well, you do well.

Here min wage is A$19.49 = U$13.64

We pretty well always tip ~10%, unless the service is shitty.

Pretty sure we're known as 'the people who tip' as I think Australians rarely do.

I hate knowing service staff are on a shitty wage and depend on tips, its just embarassing.

Was going to take a SCUBA class because I live near a neat underwater park.
Needed to get a sign-off from my doc
Went in but they told me I need to see an ENT specialist because I have Ménière's disease.
First time I can get in to see the ENT doc is well after the start of the class so now I have to hope they can put me in the next class.

My doctor said he wasn't too concerned with me losing my wits under the water, more concerned about my inner ear and destroying whats left inside there.
I had tubes put in (medical term for that escapes me now), and removed again when I was a bit older. Plus I have had off-and-on issues my whole life with inner ear stuff.
My parents said they used to find me asleep with "goo" coming out onto the pillow.

Doc said I'll probably be okay but they'd rather be on the safe side. If I go down and come back up and never hear again, it'll be stupid not to have just checked with an expert.

That must be horrifying for a parent to see their kid oozing onto the pillow.

Grommets?

I'd give it a big miss myself if I had ear problems.
