Travelling. Not every part of congo is dangerous, that country is absolutely enormous. I was only briefly in the south, most of the conflicts are in the north-east.

As for why I found it to be depressing; there's a fuckton of people living in poverty, corruption is pretty much everywhere, law enforcement and judicial systems non existant, infrastructure same thing really. Lots of people begging (even crying) for money as you pass them by and there's very poor or no healthcare and sanitation. If you travel there for a while you start to realise how much of a fucked up place Africa in general really is.

I also saw the birthday of one of swaziland's princes, his daddy spent a good deal (of the country's budget ofcourse) on getting him an F-16 and he got to choose a bride out of some 30 women they forced to strip half naked. I think I remember the gal he chose was crying.

Congo is probably the biggest shithole in all of Africa. I wasn't there for long and didn't see much but the congolese conflicts are recurrent in my courses. The belgians really put some effort in getting the prize for having the most repressive, brutal colonial regime in the world.
