it means dirtied/stained afaik. my italian friend told me the same anecdote about coffee a few years ago.
Google indicates it's 'marked', or 'stained' coffee, coffee with milk, but made to look different so people know the difference.
Also, Cappuccino is for breakfast, Macchiato for mid-morning and espresso for the rest, apparently.

in most european countries you get served a large jug/glass of fresh cold water whenever you order a coffee.
