Public school toffs with no sense of perspective or their own real worth to the world can be hilarious.
Most of the ones from my class at school are still at uni on their third or fourth course, or working in pub kitchens and taking drugs to compensate.

Doesn't mean everyone from a public school is an idiot filled with entitlement fantasies but the stereotype does sometimes fit.

As does the stereotype of the jumped up mechanic who thinks hes an engineer because he did a few courses at college.
They're really bloody hard work.

I'm not talking about private grade school, I'm talking about private colleges. The Ivy's and other small, bumfuck, expensive as hell colleges. You don't think nukchebi expects to coast for the rest of his life after he earns his Yale tie pin? People who pay for the private college education here are the same people that match your ideals of working as little as possible for the highest pay. I don't want people that do the minimum.

jay that's entirely your own bias though, cause you have a total chip on your shoulder. kids that went to private schools have "baggage"? lol. you act as if kids applying from top private schools demand their own office and VIP treatment or something. more often it's just simply the fact that they're more confident, more imbued with a sense of drive/motivation, have initiative, and are good socially. lol suggesting private school kids are like brats that don't want to work. 99% of the privately educated people i know here have FAR more work-drive and ambition than people from state schools, because a) they have pushy parents to please and b) because the private schools here are pretty relentless and instil kids from a young age with a full-day. i had school start at 7:30-8:00am (depending on term) and ending sometimes at 6-7pm, with mandatory clubs. state schools don't have that. you're always full of this bias, "boo my life" bullshit. it's funny.
I agree with zique on this.  I'm a pushy parent sending my kids to private schools.  $1K/month for prep-school, they better perform.
And to coincide with Zique's second point, about 20% more required coursework than any public High School.

And complaining about advanced schooling is a FWP.

here in the UK every college costs the same. the only hierarchy is based on entry-standards and academic research assessment. just like with the polytechnic thing you're hammering me with a stereotype and an attitude that doesn't even exist here. the system of "pay more for a college degree -> expect better life given to you" simply doesn't exist in the UK because everyone pays the same.

to be fair i think that stereotype is a bit of an anachronism. most of the kids from my year are all doing very successful things. my gf went to a top girls school, equivalent to an old public school, and all of her friends are driven as fuck as well (more than me, really). i think the upper-middle class or whatever you want to call them don't have the wealth and influence they had, say, 50 or a 100 years ago. they still do have to work to get somewhere - you don't 'go up to oxbridge' now as a rite of passage because of daddy, nor do you (normally) get a job just because your uncle teddy knows the bank manager. ofc that still exists, and i can't deny that a few people from my class are doing some literal "wtf" stuff because they have a comfortable safety-net (one of my 'old money' friends is working with elbow grease doing the shit shift in a top restaurant, trying to become a top chef, turned down a master's at cambridge to pursue this 'dream'...) but it's hardly the same attitude. public schools are still old fashioned as hell but they do try and keep up with the modern pulse.

an artsy fartsy public school? which? i didn't know they even existed. arts and creative shit were anathema at my school. for the weirdos to take part in during their lunch-breaks, if they so desired to chase that heathen and most un-anglican of pursuits.

i couldn't be bothered to refute jay on that cause i don't care about the american system or its problems, tbh. from what i know of it the hugely-inflated prices are pretty nonsensical because they're also hugely subsidised with bursaries and scholarships. i can pretty easily get a full scholarship to an ivy school (was looking at columbia last week with a prof) if i cared to do the (FUCKING MOUNTAINS) of paperwork and get it all handed in early. doesn't seem like its anywhere near as much a plutocracy as galt makes out it to be. blue-collar chip, again...
