Well, since I regarded that thread as being beneficial to myself, I think a new one should be created focussing only on the issue of answering other peoples homework questions or guiding them to a solution and not arguing over which uni/college is better, etc.

I usually go to Yahoo Answers to ask/find help to a question I'm stumped on, but I come here too to seek help and help other members with their homework problems.

If you're having issues with calc, I suggest you look up videos by PatrickJMT on youtube. The guy breaks down difficult stuff and teaches you more in five minutes than I got from my professors lectures.

You should read The Last Question by Isaac Asimov.

It's cute that you call it a dissertation.

PhD candidates write dissertations. You write essays.

lol i was just about to reply the same thing. a dissertation is a piece of work that clocks in normally at 15,000 words (for arts and humanities undergrads - scientists obviously have a lower word-limit). a PhD candidate can expect to write a piece of work from 30,000-50,000 words, typically (though there is no word limit for a PhD). my undergraduate thesis was 10,000 words and barely earned the 'dissertation' title. what can you possibly be writing overnight? it barely qualifies as an essay if it's < 2,500 words, imo. otherwise it's just a short assignment for a class. lol.

Do you think I would get away with creating an original porno as a visual anthropology project? We have seven minutes to present anything that relates to 'escapism.'

Yea man I've watched his videos in the past, they are very helpful. Chemguy also has great videos for chemistry. I have a physics problem though. It seems so easy, but I'm stumped:

a projectile of mass 2.0kg approaches a stationary target body at 5.0m/s. The projectile is deflected through 60 degrees and its speed after the collision is 3m/s. What is the magnitude of the momentum of the target body after the collision?

I've heard khan academy is good too.

@ryan - momentum will be conserved so you find momentum of projectile before, which will be equal to the sum of the projectiles momentum after and the target body's momentum after.  youll have to use the angle to calculate the momentum of them.

try drawing it out, i always find that simplest

Yea, wouldn't it be

(Mb)(vb)i + (Mt)(vt)i = (Mb)(vb)f + (Mt)(vt)f

Where Mb is the mass of the bullet, Mw mass of target, vb velocity of bullet, vt velocity of target

velocity of the target initial is 0, so I can cancel out (Mt)(vt)i
I'm solving for (Mt)(vt)f, which would be (Mb)(vb)i - (Mb)(vb)f

Lemme try something... lol

Agh, too hard trying to do it on a computer. I'll get it eventually.

Learn excel and plug your formulas into it if you want to see them solved in real time.

Not very useful when he needs to know how to do it by hand for the test.

That's not the point. If you make an excel file to show it solved step-by-step, it becomes easier to double-check your work until you eventually don't need the file.

No use doing it all by hand if you take more of a chance of learning to do it the wrong way.

Lozana reported a 1.57% volume increase at 1 atm of pressue upon melting for lithium at 180.54 degrees C. If the density of the solid is 515kg/m^3, and the enthalpy of fusion is 3024J/mol, what will the melting point be at 1000atm?

Now, I searched this online a found the answer, but they didn't explain how to get it. They found delta V (change in volume) to be 2.12 x 10^-7 m^3/mol, then they said dT = delta T = 3.13K/mol or something weird like that and I don't get what it means. Help?

Do I just stick my delta v value into the C-C equation?

This is how they calculated:
Molar mass of lithium: M=6,941 g/mol
Density of solid lithium: 515 kg/m^3 = 515000 g/m^3 = 74196,8 mol/m^3 = 1,3477*10^-5 m^3/mol --> this is the volume of 1 mol lithium
1,57% volume change: (1,3477*10^-5)*1,0157 = 1,3689*10^-5 m^3
dV=(1,3689-1,3477)*10^-5 = 2,12*10^-7 m^3

Now, we have this equation here:

dT/dp = (Tm*dV)/dfH
Where dT is the change of the melting point in Kelvin, dp is the change of pressure in Pascal, Tm is the standard melting point, dV is the change of volume in m^3, and dfH is the enthalpy of fusion in Joule/mol.
So you have every data you need to find dT.
dp=1,01223*10^8 Pa
Tm=453,69 K
dV= 2,12*10^-7 m^3
dfH= 3024 Joule/mol

So dT=3,2195 K , which means that the new melting point (at 1000 atm) is 456,9 K

Thanks. I managed to figure it out using the Clausius-Clapeyron eqn, which is a bit simpler for me, but now that you explain this, it makes sense.
