It's a sensitivity born of dependence. It's really annoying, but at this point I can probably smell someone smoking a cigarette from a block away. It brings a weird mix of crave/loathe. Cigarettes smell terrible, but the smell still makes me pat my pocket for my pack sometimes.
That said, I despise the anti-smoking nazis that have never tried it at all but yet feel the need to walk around all high and mighty telling others how superior they are for never trying it. As annoying as standing next a smoker is, they are doing damage to themselves, not you. I don't see people trying to ban perfume or cologne because some people wear too much. I don't see people trying to ban car tailpipes. It's always smokers.
