Fox has as many, if not more, viewers than the other news channels combined. What you should be arguing about is not whether or not fox is mainstream, because it obviously is, but why you let them monopolize the message of the right. That just makes the right easier to control.

On my walk to work today I saw a flyer for "Occupy Wellington". It had the subtitle "We are the 1%, expect us".

Way to go you ignorant pricks.

What will they be protesting? NZ doesn't have the same massive wage disparity the US has. NZ is also very much a welfare state, we have free healthcare. Hell, we have income assistance packages for people who aren't earning enough to live on not to mention disability and the DPB.

According to their demands they want  "a return to real democracy, a government by the people for the people and an economic system that works for 100 per cent of the people''.

What?

NZ's electoral system is Mixed-Member Proportional, you can't get much more literally democratic than that. The Government is for the people as the aforementioned welfare shows. As for the economic system. - what the Hell do they expect the NZ Government to do? Economics in NZ are really influenced by what's happening overseas, we're not a mover and a shaker, we make work whatever we get.

I'm all for political dissent but if you're just jumping on the bandwagon try to make it a little less obvious.

I should point out that the Occupy Wall Street protest is against corporate control, not the corporations themselves.

the big problem with this protest is that it has no real defined goal or organisational structure (ironically because it IS a genuine grassroots movement) so it's very easy to poke fun at them in this way. they leave themselves naturally exposed because they aren't pulling in one direction because i'll bet you a large sum of money that a fairly significant portion of the protesters ARE protesting against corporations in general.

While no protest movement is going to be 100% on the same page I doubt many people in America are "anti-corporation" in all ways and I doubt a significant portion of the protesters would hold this view. To laugh about how hypocritical protesters are because they use products made by corporations isn't funny, clever or ironic it's just a dumb illogical argument to try and dismiss them. I agree that this protest is poorly defined and it's certainly not above being mocked but that picture pointing out the so-called irony of the protesters annoys me with its stupidity.

It's all so very ambiguous. Trust me I know.. there are splinter protest going on here in Tampa as well..

Fuck da po-lice.

Yeah agreed about the ambiguity but I would say that saying the protesters are against corporations and trying to point out the irony is clutching at straws in terms of both humour and argument.

It's really in jest. But there is a certain "enabling" point in that image.

You know, let's put some context on this so called movement. I think it would be rather embarrassing to get behind something with so much passion when there really isn't a clear message. What did our parents say when we were upset? Use your words. Yea, we're all kinda pissed. It sure as hell isn't a minority that shares the general disapproval of corporate mngmt. And no, not every protest is 100% on the same page. But these people have nothing on what organizers did during during the civil rights movement, or during the Vietnam war for that matter. That's the kind pretty-well-defined heart felt passion that I find admirable. If it seems like I'm dismissing them it's only because I am. Get it together and I'll reconsider.

.. seriously if you're going to plan on getting arrested at least have an endgame. And I tell you what, I wouldn't be taking ^that guys advice if I'm planning on having an arrest on my record for the rest of my life.

It's actually a little but funny. The police are letting them do their thing and they seem disappointed at the lack of confrontation.
