So I have Windows 7 x64 on my computer and I have a friend who needs data rescued from her external HDD that she uses with her Mac. The HDD is on its way out and she needs to get a lot of stuff off of it and onto another HDD. Unfortunately the HDD doesn't turn on (we're going to try the freezer method), but I was wondering if there was a way that I could get her data off now instead of waiting until she has time in a week to bring her Macbook over. Any way I can do this with a Windows OS or Ubuntu?

this utility lets a windows system read the HFS partition.  but if the external hard drive won't turn on, i can't see any other way to get the data without using a data recovery service.

Well I'm not sure what the problem is with the HDD yet. I was going to first freeze it and see if maybe something is gummed up. She's not very technical (she studies psychotherapy), so her diagnosis of the drive might be somewhat... inexact. Thanks for the utility, I am gonna give that a shot later this week!

Thanks! I'll hopefully be rescuing the data next week or this weekend... the sooner the better.
