Man Indicted In Strip Club Beating
Oxford Man Facing Charges
POSTED: 2:25 pm EDT May 20, 2011
UPDATED: 2:46 pm EDT May 20, 2011
BOSTON -- An Oxford man charged in connection with a beating in a strip club men’s room was indicted Friday by the Worcester County grand jury.
Easton Byfield, 36, was indicted for unarmed robbery, assault and battery and aggravated kidnapping. He will be arraigned on Wednesday in Worcester Superior Court, Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. said.
Byfield was summoned to Central District Court in February to face charges stemming from a beating in the men’s room of the Platinum Premier Club in May of 2010.
The victim, a man in his 20s, did not report the incident to police when it happened, but it was recorded on a cell phone.
When the video of the incident was posted on the Internet earlier this year, Worcester police began an investigation that led to charges against Byfield, police said.

WORCESTER — The bouncer videotaped beating a patron last year at the Platinum Premier Gentlemen’s Club on Southbridge Street was found in the club parking lot by police less than a week after he was charged in connection with the attack — even though the owner told police the man would have “nothing to do” with the club until criminal charges were settled.
In License Commission documents, police investigators allege Easton Byfield and another employee at the gentlemen’s club also gave them the runaround as they tried to enter the club Feb. 24 to follow up on complaints that the club was watering down drinks.
The documents, filed by police in support of a request for a hearing before the commission, include complaints regarding the videotaped beating; allegations that the club remained open after hours; and that it may have made thousands of dollars in fraudulent charges on a patron’s credit card.
The License Commission will hold a hearing at 10 a.m. Thursday to discuss the alleged violations. If the commission finds evidence of the violations, the club’s alcohol, food or entertainment licenses could be modified, suspended, revoked or canceled.
Christopher J. Stephans, owner of Platinum Premier, did not immediately return a phone message left yesterday at the club.
According to police statements provided by the License Commission, police and investigators from the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission went to the club at 241 Southbridge St. on Feb. 24 to test liquor to see if it was watered down.
According to Officer Mark E. Jolin of the police Alcohol Enforcement Unit, investigators during previous visits had seen open liquor bottles and numerous empty liquor bottles and mixing bowls in the club’s storage area, but didn’t have equipment to test the liquor.
The ABCC investigators on Feb. 24 brought a test kit to detect watered-down alcohol.
Officer Jolin wrote that another investigator had called Mr. Stephans to meet them at the club for an inspection. Mr. Stephans said he wouldn’t be able to get there until later in the day because he was out of town. He told investigators he was the only person with keys to the business.
Just after calling Mr. Stephans, investigators went to the club and observed that the gated parking lot was locked, but also noticed a Pontiac sport utility vehicle parked next to the rear entrance.
“According to the owner of Platinum Premier, no one else had access to the business,” Officer Jolin wrote. “The owner also said there were thousands of threats to the business and its employees since the video of Easton Byfield aired on (YouTube).”
Mr. Byfield and Tien W. Russell, the man who allegedly videotaped the beating, have been arraigned on assault, robbery and kidnapping charges in Central District Court. Mr. Byfield, who was arrested Feb. 18, allegedly took a 25-year-old patron into the bathroom, accused him of selling drugs, repeatedly punched him, and robbed him of $300.
Officer Jolin wrote that he jumped the fence to the parking lot and approached the vehicle, only to find the man he recognized as Easton Byfield sitting in the passenger seat.
Mr. Byfield told Officer Jolin that he and another employee of the club, Alberto Rodriguez, were picking up his car and that Mr. Rodriguez had gone into the club to use the bathroom.
Investigators tried to get in the rear door of the business, but it was locked. Officer Jolin told Mr. Byfield to unlock the door, but he said Mr. Rodriguez had the key. Officers banged on the door, and repeatedly told Mr. Byfield to open the door. Mr. Byfield repeated that he did not have a key, according to Officer Jolin’s report.
“I told Byfield to call Berto on his cell phone,” Officer Jolin wrote. “Byfield replied that the police had his cell phone (seized after his arrest) so he could not call Berto.”
But then, Officer Jolin wrote, he heard a phone ringing in Mr. Byfield’s pocket.
Mr. Byfield said it was a different phone. Officer Jolin told Mr. Byfield to call Mr. Rodriguez, but Mr. Byfield said he didn’t have his number.
“I made it clear to Byfield that he was being untruthful to us,” Officer Jolin wrote.
Another investigator called Mr. Stephans to ask what the employees were doing at his business, and the club owner was asked to call Mr. Rodriguez to open the door.
“At this point it was appearing that the investigation was being hindered,” Officer Jolin wrote. “Stephans said that he would call Berto. This continued for 40 minutes.”
Eventually, according to Officer Jolin’s report, Mr. Rodriguez came out with his sleeves rolled up “at the exact moment that owner Christopher Stephans drove up to our location.”
When investigators entered the club, they found several empty liquor bottles behind the bar. Mr. Stephans told investigators that’s how he renewed his inventory.
“Several bottles were checked and a bottle of Captain Morgan’s Rum showed to have been watered down, according to the test kit,” Officer Jolin wrote.
Officer Jolin wrote that Mr. Stephans had previously assured investigators that in the wake of the videotaped beating incident, that Mr. Byfield would have nothing to do with his business.
“When we found Byfield and Rodriguez at the business on the 24th, Byfield not only had a key but he had a remote control that worked the gate to the parking lot,” Officer Jolin wrote. “The Platinum Premier and its owner will be brought before the City of Worcester Licensing Authority for hindering an investigation.”
In addition to the alleged hindering and the complaint regarding the beating, a third allegation stated that the business violated its license by remaining open between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m.
The report, submitted by Officer Robert Belsito, states that a police detective interviewed a man in July who claimed the club fraudulently charged his credit card.
According to Officer Belsito’s report, more than $20,000 was charged to the man’s credit card from 2:30 a.m. to 4:32 a.m. for entertainment.
According to the report, Mr. Stephans told investigators he was not present during the evening in question.
Basically all the youtube comments is my response.
I don't think he was selling drugs and they just accused him of it as a pretense to rob him.
Hope the man is getting raped in prison.
And above your tomb, the stars will belong to us.
what a coincidence! i'm hoping for sloppy seconds.-Sh1fty- wrote:

WORCESTER — A former strip club manager was sentenced to less than a year in jail yesterday after pleading guilty to charges stemming from the videotaped beating, robbery and kidnapping of a club patron last year.
Easton A. Byfield, 36, of Oxford, was sentenced to 364 days in the House of Correction with 3 years of probation to follow after entering guilty pleas yesterday morning in Worcester Superior Court to charges of assault and battery, unarmed robbery and kidnapping.
The crimes occurred May 25, 2010, in a men's room at the Platinum Premier Gentlemen's Club, 241 Southbridge St., but police did not begin an investigation until a videotape showing Mr. Byfield assaulting 25-year-old Patrick Blanchard of Sterling surfaced earlier this year on YouTube and other websites.
Mr. Byfield's lawyer, Michael P. Murphy, who recommended the sentence imposed by Judge James R. Lemire, later told a reporter that his Jamaica-born client was expected to face immigration consequences as a result of his pleas, but it was his understanding that deportation would be less likely if Mr. Byfield were sentenced to less than one year in jail.
Assistant District Attorney Daniel J. Bennett recommended that Mr. Byfield be sentenced to 3 to 5 years in state prison.
Mr. Blanchard alleges in a pending civil lawsuit that Mr. Byfield took him into a men's room at the club, falsely accused him of selling drugs to the dancers, repeatedly punched him in the face and stole $362 from him.
At one point on the videotape, which was uploaded to the Internet by another former club employee after he had a falling out with Mr. Byfield, Mr. Blanchard is seen being forced to kneel on the floor and pay homage to Mr. Byfield by reciting, “Oh great (expletive) brown dude. Oh great (expletive) brown dude.”
Mr. Bennett conceded that his recommended sentence of 3 to 5 years exceeded advisory sentencing guidelines used by most judges, but said the facts of the case warranted such a sentence.
The prosecutor said it was apparent from the video that Mr. Byfield was “attempting to humiliate Mr. Blanchard and not just take his money and not just confine him.”
Mr. Blanchard was not in court for the plea, but his father, Sidney Blanchard, was, accompanied by Andrea Levy, one of his son's lawyers in the civil case. The elder Mr. Blanchard echoed Mr. Bennett's sentiments and asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence allowed by law.
The father described the videotape as “the most humiliating thing that I've ever seen in my entire life.”
“My son can't go out of the house without looking over his shoulder constantly,” he said, adding that Mr. Byfield did not appear remorseful.
“Mr. Byfield is very remorseful. He regrets what he did that evening,” said his lawyer. Mr. Murphy also noted that Mr. Byfield had no prior criminal record and is the father of two young children.
As conditions of probation, Mr. Byfield was ordered to have no contact with Mr. Blanchard and to pay him $362 in restitution.
In his civil suit, Mr. Blanchard alleges that the video has been viewed “hundreds of thousands” of times, causing him embarrassment, humiliation and emotional distress.
A co-defendant in the case, Tien W. Russell, 25, of Leominster, was also charged with assault and battery, kidnapping and unarmed robbery as a joint venturer. The charges against Mr. Russell were dismissed in July in Central District Court.
Mr. Bennett said yesterday that Mr. Russell videotaped the beating and robbery at Mr. Byfield's request, then uploaded it onto YouTube and other websites after he had a falling-out with Mr. Byfield and was fired by him.
