What the hell is gender crime? You get a stiffer punishment for killing a woman over a man now? To what end would you classify crimes by gender, of all things?

A. I'm not sure how the Mexican justice system works. Nor do I think anyone on this forum is.
B. I know that crime against women (rapes, and targeting women specifically because they are women.) was pretty endemic in Mexico a little awhile ago so women crime laws could be a rational reaction to crime on women.
C. If it puts violent offenders away for long I can live with it.
D. Not "we", 'they'

B. I think crime in general is pretty endemic in Mexico

C. How about putting ALL violent offenders away for a long time instead of it depending on who they attack?

D. give us time.

So, justice is "blind" when it comes to zero tolerance policies and following the letter of the law contrary to common sense.
(Kids expelled from school under 'zero tolerance' for having Midol in their lockers, OJ Simpson getting away with murder)
Yet, Lady Justice is exactingly observant of your 'special status'
(race, religion, sex, gender confusion, proclivity towards butthurtitude, ...)

Here's a novel thought; Punish the crime based on the crime, not on irrelevant attributes of the attacker or victim

Systemic, willful, purposeful disregard of basic common sense.

Well, it seems as though that the reason these type of laws exist in the first place is to provide an extra incentive against a crime that seems "rampant". If in Mexico, they had a huge influx in crimes against women, it would make sense that the people in power would look for a way to curb that trend.

Once the law is in place, it is really difficult to draw back on it since the argument could be made that by changing it back the rate of that crime would increase again.  Nobody wants to be the reason that certain crime rates rise.  So, they just leave the law in place even though there is no perceived need for it.

It's not a perfect system by any means, but I think the initial intentions are worthy of props.  Now, we just need to figure out how to "fix" it.  Maybe you are right lowing, maybe the punishment for other similar crimes need to be raised to meet these. I dunno.

We live in a society now where we have surpassed equality and moved into special needs rights and privileges.  Some how, everyone is special now, entitled to special consideration.

Not sure "kill a woman and you will pay, kill a guy and not so much" is the message that should be sent.. I prefer, "kill anyone and you are fucked beyond all belief."

When 'Big Bad Bubba' bends you over, it doesn't matter if it is a man or woman as the victim.
Punish the crime, not arbitrary characteristics of the parties involved.

Emotionalism, "I want", desires, and entitlement have trumped rational thought, "I earned", fairness, and common sense.
(This is also a good argument against direct democracy, and in favor of representative republics)

Look at the 'news' - it isn't rational discussion of issues, or description of events.
It's all human interest noise, emotional appeals instead of rational discourse, and red-faced screaming bobble-headed hosts drowning out their guests victims.
News & Politics has turned into a primate's ritual.
He who can scream the loudest, throw the most shit, and beat his chest most convincingly, wins.
"You can't explain that!" - Sure I can.  Now go sit in a corner, STFU, and eat a banana while adults are talking!

These dumb-assed laws are a result of infotainment news/media appealing to the baser emotions of the masses.
Show a sympathetic victim, queue the dramatic music to tell the listener what emotional reaction is expected.
Now put up the pandering politician that sternly vows to 'fix this problem! Just vote for me! A vote for me is a vote for puppies, rainbows, and kids'

I think he's saying that making such a distinction, when laws on the books already cover the crime in question, is non-sensical.

Idk what you know about the violence and mistreatment towards women in Mexico, but if I were one of them I would want special laws protecting me.

Then they should tighten up enforcement of existing laws.
Perhaps make more severe the penalties for rape, assault, domestic violence, and such.
Doesn't matter if the victim is male or female - make the laws fit the crime.

Making special case laws seems like discrimination at worst, blatant appeal to emotionalism at best.

How many brain-dead laws start with "but.. but.. think of the poor helpless children, or women, or elderly, or <race>, or <sex>, or <minority>"?

The police can emphasize protecting women better, the judges can throw the maximum sentences - but the laws should apply equally to all adults.

For example;
Mexican male rapes another Mexican male - then the same exact Mexican male rapes a rich white Jewish lesbian female tourist.
The crime is the same, why should the punishment differ?

OK, replace JLAP with Mexican woman. The question still stands: Why should the punishment for the latter be any different than for the former?

Because they are especially targeted. It is more of an offense to a society to continue a bad trend, rather than to commit a less common crime that doesn't feed such a bloated endemic.
