I can't see how going to Iraq was the wrong thing to do, but we've gone over this many times by now so let's just leave it at that.Jay wrote:
Quite the opposite. I think the Iraq campaign was conducted well, even with the glaring mistake of assuming the population would welcome us with open arms and immediately transition to democracy without our military needing to serve as a police force. They missed the boat there.
Nope, my problem is with the invasion as a whole. We should not have gone there at all.
I want our military shrunk down to perhaps 100,000 people on active duty. I want the hawks to have their favorite toy taken away from them. They aren't god, they don't get to choose who lives and who dies from the safety of their living room.
You need some degree of order to have a properly functioning society, we can agree on that - my point wasn't about dictating your daily life, it's about the need for order. The international society needs rules and regulation to function just the same and, at times, these need to be enforced. We are connected economically and thus socially, it is impossible to seperate the two. At times, we have a moral obligation to intervene. Standing by and doing nothing while you have the power to do something is hideously selfish, not to mention that it might just help protect trade - stopping Saddam from taking over Kuwait kept the oil price from skyrocketing while at the same time you held at bay a power hungry dictator. There's no wrongdoing in that, as there is none in protecting trading vessels from being attacked by Somali pirates and the like.Jay wrote:
Hardly. As long as there is some form of judicial oversight that punishes negative actions between individuals it works quite well. Punish theft, fraud, assault, and the like, and you have enough order to allow business to thrive. Greek 'guest right', nothing more. I don't need people telling me what I can eat, or drink, or smoke. That people have such power is because of your desire for order.
In addition, we were left with the legacy of the WW2 generation. A larger international community which stands by eachother is the way forward. Undoing that would mean going backwards.
