Just got this on steam the other day, it's crazy fun and addicting.  My latest project is getting a single stage space plane to the Moon and and back.

This was my final product space plane, a TSC5-A with the mission title Defiance 2, finally got into a low orbit with a combination of jet engines followed by an embedded rocked booster.
https://static.bf2s.com/files/user/14407/Kerbal1.jpg

Once in space, though, I had very little fuel for my moon trip, so I launched an unmanned fuel tanker to rendezvous with it in orbit, dock, and refuel
https://static.bf2s.com/files/user/14407/Kerbal2.jpg

I got pretty damn close, but my orbits were slightly eccentric and I couldn't make the rendezvous
https://static.bf2s.com/files/user/14407/Kerbal3.jpg

Because of the failed refueling, I was forced to return the kerban, however, the spaceplane was my first ship to bring a kerbal to orbit and back home safely, so I planted a flag in commemoration
https://static.bf2s.com/files/user/14407/Kerbal4.jpg

I've since made improvements to the design, and my TSC7-B is looking promising for my upcoming trip to the moon

Holy shit, you're so much better than me!

I've been playing for... 3 days and I just hit the moon today.

.. and I mean hit. I couldn't slow down enough and my landing gear didn't even reach low enough...

Still, getting close!

How do you make spaceplanes that don't suck? Mine are just godawful at even maintaining level flight.

You basically need a lot of air intake for the jet engines, especially at higher altitudes, and a design that's stable, ie, center of gravity slightly in front of the center of lift. And while you're climbing, you have to monitor the air intake. If it drops below 0.10ish, the engines will flame out and almost always send you into an unrecoverable spin.

Finally perfected my tanker design, got it into orbit with full rocket fuel and full rcs fuel.
https://static.bf2s.com/files/user/14407/Kerbal5.jpg

Got within 10m, perfectly aligned with my spaceplane for docking when I accidentally engaged my main booster and damaged both ships. Mission was a total loss unfortunately.

I've since perfected my rcs design and am confident I'll have a docking and orbital refuel tonight

Aaaaand the last post of the Defiance missions:

Finally docked in orbit and was able to refuel my space plane, an SPC9-C, designated Defiance 6

Finally with enough fuel, I departed Kerban's orbit for Mun

Made it safely to Mun, did a few orbits and returned to Kerban.  Unfortunately, I do not have a way to land the plane in little atmosphere, so we will return someday with newer aircraft!

I'm jealous.

I've got to the moon once but now I can't seem to get there at all... Frustrating.

Can't get them back on this rocket though. I'm really not that good at making good big rockets. Gonna need to be more pro in order to get beyond the Mun.

Am I reading that right? It took you 1 hour and 53 minutes to get there? Or even 1 minute and 53 seconds?

Is it much better now than the demo was?

I think I'd focused on the flag and it had only been there for those two minutes. Landing it actually took ages because I had to slow down a shit ton to get a good landing path.

I never played the demo, but i must say I am quite addicted to this.  Just have to give yourself missions more than just "get to orbit" and "get to the moon"

Speaking of missions, I've finally finished with the Defiance missions and have moved on to what I've designated the Armstrong missions.  The problem with the Defiance program was, a. the space planes did not carry nearly enough fuel to make it to Mun, land, and return home, and b. the craft were not designed to land in low gravity or low atmosphere.

To solve this for the Armstrong missions, I developed the TSC9-LE, a modified variant of the TSC9 platform which I designed to be able to operate in the lunar environment.  The craft features retrograde thrusters for braking, light underbelly landing thrusters, enhanced lighting (for docking and landing), and a coupling system for docking with an orbital nacelle fuel tank.  Additionally, the TSC9 is a general, all around improvement from the TSC5s and TSC6s used in the Defiance program.

To solve my low fuel problem, I included an external fuel tank to be outfitted to the craft during the orbital refueling, and jettisoned prior to landing

Once in orbit around Mun, the retrograde thrusters and landing thrusters proved invaluable and finally led to my first Munar landing with Armstrong 4

I've gotta say, though, there's a reason people don;t take space planes to the moon.  That was an incredibly difficult landing
