My price range is ~$50-$100

I used to have really awesome ear buds but I don't remember what brand they were.

Specs I'm looking for:

- some level of noise cancellation
- internal sub woofers (I really like bass)
- clarity
- portability
- fabric (as opposed to plastic) wire coverings

I'm open to either earbuds (as long as they are in-ear) or regular headphones.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Good, that's what I want. I like something that I can easily stash away, not those big bulky air traffic controller things.

ok make the price range 50-100

The widest possible. Average human hearing for an adult is 20hz - 20khz, but maybe a little lower if you have been exposed to a lot of loud sound, and deteriorates with age. Some headphones have freq range past 20khz, and whilst you can't actually hear the notes the subharmonics in music can affect those notes you hear and add slightly more clarity and "air" to the ultra highs.

What do you want your headphones for?

Ultimate Ears 600vi .. seenem for about $75
Offers most everything the op wants.
Shure se210's or se215's might be an option.

I'm thinking of upgrading my earbuds from the standard iPhone ones to something better. Have you had any experience with these on and iPod/iPhone, and is there much of a difference?

Yes, and they're much better than the standard iPod ones. Especially in comfort and noise cancelling.

On a similar note, what's the general opinion of those Beats by Dre headphones? All marketing or are they actually any good?

Reviews seem good, but I can only find stuff from sites like CNET where they'll say anything is good to ensure they keep getting paid. I wasn't going to get any, at the very least they're overpriced even if they are good.

Thing you have to ask yourself is do you want to buy headphones from a reputable brand, or ones that come with Dr Dre on them? And in asking the question consider which is more likely to be gimmicky from a marketing angle.

They're actually decent quality and made by a reputable brand, but extremely overpriced. You can get similar or better quality for cheaper and much better quality for the same price

That's what I figured. They're Monster, so if they cost $300 then they're worth $30.

I know a few people that have the dre beats solo. My brother is one of them and he just wont shut up about how great they are. then again, he is a marketing sucker that cant look at a single subject objectively. He keeps claiming how they sound better than my steelseries siberia v2 and how buddies sennies (dont know which one's, but they sound better than the solo)
Basically you pay for something that you can get of equal quality for half the price just so you can look like a douche from a music video.

I also know one guy who has the studio, which is pretty neat. He got it for like 200 (i belive its actually 300euros), still a bit too expensive if you ask me, but the whole noise cancellation works pretty good.
It does need batteries though.
