The final planned US shuttle launch is scheduled to be 8 July 2011 11:26:46 EDT. There is a chance that the launch will have to be scrubbed due to weather, sadly. After that there are no more shuttle launches. Its primary mission is to resupply the ISS. It'll also be doing some other stuff including bringing back a failed ammonia pump.

Does anyone know why this is the last one? Kinda shocked me that this is really the LAST one. I didn't even believe it at first.

I believe the plan was for the Ares rockets, but 'the orator' scrapped that.

I doubt it's going to launch tomorrow. There's only a 30% chance. They are supposed to decide if they are even going to start fueling within the hour. There was a lighting strike at the cape earlier today, and naturally if you don't need all that fuel on the pad you don't want it sitting in a thunderstorm.

Now that the ISS is finished there really isn't a need for something that can carry that much payload at once.
This is my link to the Atlantis page.
I recommend Spacevidcast for watching online.

I've always wanted to see the space shuttle launch in person

So why are they getting rid of it?

Too bad they don't axe more things that are cost-inefficient.

The House Appropriations Committee proposed Wednesday to kill the James Webb Space Telescope, the crown jewel of NASA’s astronomy plans for the next two decades.

Tod R. Lauer, an astronomer at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson, echoed his view. “This would be an unmitigated disaster for cosmology,” he said. “After two decades of pushing the Hubble to its limits, which has revolutionized astronomy, the next step would be to pack up and give up. The Hubble is just good enough to see what we’re missing at the start of time.”

The Webb telescope, he said, “would bring it home in full living color.”
Well that sucks.. immensely. Hopefully it's just political hot air.

Ah righto.
What will take its place? Surely it'd have to be something pretty decent...Cant imagine something becoming as symbolic as the shuttle.

So what exactly is NASA's plan now? Ever since Obama killed the constellation program there hasn't really been a goal for the future.

NASA is looking to break the cycle of low earth orbit. They've been tasked with developing a new launch vehicle by 2016.

bet those idiots trying to scrap the telescope have no idea what it does, or have any grasp of the contributions to society made by NASA, or even took science courses past high school. and I bet those damn fools would have a fit if you suggested cutting the only three big parts of our budget.
