Google's new social network, "Google+" premiered today to much fanfare in the media, and rightly so. The service launched to a limited number of users today in what Google is calling a "field trial." A few PCWorld staffers were lucky enough to be invited to try out the service (it’ll roll out to everybody in the coming months), so naturally we got right to testing the new service.

In general we thought the service borrowed some good ideas from the reigning king of social networks, Facebook, but also offers some cool new approaches to sharing content and managing privacy. In short, Google+ is a solid start to an insurgent social networking platform that is sure to be enhanced rapidly over the coming months, and could soon offer a solid alternative to Facebook. Now, let's dig in.

i'm not sure i have the time or effort to use another social network. google's buzz or whatever it's called that just syncs with my twitter/picasa/whatever has literally *never* got any use from me. i use twitter. i use facebook. for some reason a service that unites them all just doesn't appeal to me.

Buzz never really caught on.

So far it looks like a very simple facebook with tags/lists for your friends.
Which is good enough for me. I'll bother with filling everything out and getting it going, but will probably not use it as much as fb.
I can also see this as being a kind of consolidated-blog/RSS feed, provided people post enough stuff frequently.

I think the ability to separate a boss from a friend is huge in your streams. Facebook will probably just hijack the idea though.

I think circles are going to get extremely confusing with large numbers of friends, especially because the entire networking part of the site is based around them.

There is no such thing as a friend. Only people in circles.

The biggest obstacle google has to overcome is either getting people to use it with facebook, or convincing people to migrate. Being able to import FB users would help. Better privacy controls (such as not having a default in policy) would also be a plus.

The more and more i read up on this, the more i'm getting excited.

I spend hours working over my privacy settings on facebook~ and normally shit people for doing so...

I mean.. you can make lists in facebook~ why can't you auto apply that list to not be able to see new albums?

no, you have to re-add every fucking person on it each and every time. My mother's best friend does not have to see who i'm having fondle messages with. tyvm.

Circles is an amazing innovation, and i can't wait

i've already been able to exclude certain people or bosses or teachers or family members from my facebook feed postings... every single thing you post has an easily-customisable 'privacy' settings. this circle business is just a fancy way of rephrasing what facebook have had with their privacy groupings and separate facebook chat contact lists for years. it's boring. i just don't see why we need another social network. didn't myspace just sell for $35million dollars in a quiet flop of business disappointment about a week ago? everything is centralized now on facebook and i think google are going to waste a lot of money trying to drive a wedge into that market majority.

ease of use is a very strong factor.

I'm not saying that google+ is the next huge thing, but it definitely has potential,

it's a bit of a catch-22, though, because for the google circles feature to have any real huge benefit, you're going to need lots of... well... different circles of friends using google+. they won't. 99% of people will stay on facebook.
