Sometimes American sitcoms are founded on a running gag.

Al Bundy is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the American television series Married... with Children.[1] Played by Ed O'Neill, Bundy is a misanthropic, working-class father of two who is portrayed as a somewhat tragicomedic figure. Although he is a born loser who constantly laments his lot in life, he nevertheless stands by his family, displaying wit, self-sacrifice and resilience in times of crisis.

He works as a shoe salesman at the fictional Gary's Shoes and Accessories for Today's Woman in the fictional New Market Mall. Al hates his job, loses it several times throughout the series, yet always ends up coming back to it. There is a running joke throughout the show that Al makes minimum-wage.

The cast of friends lived in appartments in the center of NYC and one of them was chronically unemployed while the other worked as a parttime barista. How realistic is that?

i've heard that line about 5,000 times. very insightful larssen. you should be a tv critic.

It was a bit of a rhetorical point in response to newbie. Not meant as a serious 'omg tv is lying' point. Of course a TV show isn't realistic. Usually it's the whole point

i'm doing the same but with seinfeld. feels like a glaring omission in my tv-watching history. consuming a quick episode with my bowl of noodles every lunchtime.

pretty much the same sentiments. it's workmanlike and well-crafted but not all that memorable. a few lines here and there. maybe it'll grow on me.
The earlier seasons always felt way more dated to me, even watching them in the 90s. I'm biased, but in general think it aged a lot better than Friends as a contemporary show.

Have a relevant clip.

imho that's more a perpetuation of a racist stereotype than a funny tv skit. It's a recurring theme in old tv shows / movies, particularly the ones from the 60s, that the english hero or protagonist surrounded by foreigners is insulted and talked down upon whenever the 'foreign tongues' are spoken. Look at the foreign koreans talking korean! They're badmouthing us!

It's also lazy writing.

I like (liked?) Seinfeld the show but I was never a fan of Jerry or his comedy. The most talented person on that show is clearly Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Fran Drescher were some early crushes in the 90's.

Dilbert and me probably have the same secret desire: to settle down with a nasally Jewess from New York.

It's definitely a trope, yes. Because it happened to be Korean instead of, say, Vietnamese or any other East Asian group was why I posted it in re Zeek.

Everyone knows it's Vietnamese that do nails anyway, at least in the US. Has it's roots in the refugees coming from the Vietnam War.

Vietnamese do the nails
Koreans do sushi and convenience stores
Cambodians and Lao do donuts, athough this is a bit California specific. Donut shops are notoriously immigrant run businesses, like dry cleaners and convenience stores (see above)

No, the incessant whining would be unbearable. Even when they're not whining they sound like they are.

Put that engineering degree to use and recalibrate your racism detector. It's been malfunctioning for years!

WandaVision -∞/10

I gave this show such a score because I am not going to watch it. I am sick of seeing articles about this stupid Marvel show about a lady in a relationship with robot.

I didn't know there was a show. I just kept seeing mentions of it in passing memes.

Superhero TV has in past years been some of the most boring programming I've ever watched. Starts out slow, stays slow, cancelled before conclusion. Dead horse.

Speaking of memes, I have access top Disney+ through a relative but I haven't watched a minute of the Mandalorian. I like Baby Yoda though.

If you don't care about spoilers I think Corridor Crew redid one of those creepy deepfake scenes to be less creepy. Interesting from a technical perspective, though I didn't really have context for the scene.

I happened to be reading about The Mandalorian recently and learned of some retconning in it I was unaware of. I'm sure it's decent, but it seems like fan service there.

Zack Snyders Justice League - Not sure yet/10

I've seen snippets and it seems like they just added a lot of scenes of people looking moody and staring into the distance to fill up the time.

If there's a comic book movie that even Dilbert can't get behind, that's a pretty solid indication.

I'll still watch it though.
