Do a lot of referring to non-blacks as "nigger"?

The point of the PSA is not that you shouldn't refer to the mentally or physically challenged as "retard." That's a no-brainer. The point is that you don't refer to others by those offensive terms...those terms that--when applied to the groups they are intended for--cause significant pain. The point is this term is the same.
The "medical term" argument shows the lack of knowledge people have on the subject. The medical community has moved away from using the term due to the negative connotation associated with it because of its colloquial use in society and because the understanding of the spectrum of mental handicaps has grown beyond that simplistic vocabulary. Bottomline: it's people trying to justify what has become unjustifiable.
If you had a loved one who had to deal with this kind of shit, you might have a less cavalier approach to the subject.
